Prayer and fasting seem to be taught in scripture

The Church recommends that those undergtakung rigorous mortifications such as multi-day fasts do so only under oobedience to a spiritual director.

This is a very serious suggestion on the Church’s part as without SD, the penitent can be led down the wrong path.
