I am new at this, but I hope you can benefit from my experience. When I am on my knees before Mass, I want to have my last personal conversation with God before we start our community prayers. It makes me feel closer to Him to talk to him about a few things in particular: I’m sorry for doing the things I have done that offend you – whether I realized them or not. You are my one God. Thank you for all of the blessings you give me every day. Please grant me the strength, wisdom and patience I know I need and, also, the grace to understand the other virtues you know I need. Please watch over my family and friends, people I know who need your guidance, and, lastly, please watch over people who don’t have others praying for them.

Keep in mind, I don’t say these words, but they are my “agenda” for my talk with Him. I find that it helps me prepare for the Mass with open heart and mind, so I can participate with the community without my baggage or distraction.

God bless you and all those who are important to you.

I usually go early. I always say an act of contrition, for any wayward thoughts I may have had that day before Mass, the prayers before Mass in my missal, and if time I read the gospel and epistle for the mass that day as lectio divina. 🙂
