What is a good book of common Roman Catholic prayers? preferably in English or at very least English with Latin translation.

God Bless

I like the Handbook of Prayers (edited by James Socias). It’s published by Our Sunday Visitor (ISBN: 0879735791).

Two of the best are:

My Prayerbook by Fr. Lasance
and
Blessed Be God by Msgrs. Charles Callan & John McHugh

I like The Catholic Prayer Book compiled by Michael Buckley
(Servant Books). It has many traditional litanies, prayers for numerous occasions, prayers from the saints as well as prayers from the Mass and Stations of the Cross.
The only prayers I don’t like in this book are the ones written by Buckley and some of the modern writers who would suffer from any comparison with their traditional counterparts.

I have sent Fulton Sheen’s (pocket-sized) Wartime Prayer Book to five or six American Catholic soldiers in Iraq and they have all enjoyed it.

Blessed Be God is a wonderful and I mean wonderful book of prayers. In addition to prayers it contains some key tenets such as the precepts, fruits of the Holy Spirit, virtues etc.

How does this one compare with My Prayer Book by Fr Lasance.

The “best” prayer book is the one you’ll use every day!

I love Father Lasance’s books. I have to collect them all.

All I have so far is, ‘A Catholic Girl’s Guide’ and ‘With God - A Book of Prayers & Reflections’ both of which I have in etext form, and the former hard copy.

It’s great to get old prayer manuals for various societies, my Benedictine Manual is priceless.

Handbook of Prayers published by the Midwest Theological Forum, edited by Rev. James Socias. It includes litanies, daily prayers, basic Catholic prayers, “How to become a better Catholic,” prayers for before, during, and after Mass, for Confession, for Eucharistic Adoration, and devotions to many of the Saints. All are in English with most having the Latin next to them.

That does look like an excellent collection. One advantage of more modern prayerbooks is that they will include updates like the Divine Mercy devotion or the Fatima prayers (which are more modern than the Lasance prayerbook) and prayers to more recent saints.

I have a book which compiles prayers written by Saints.

The Liturgy of the Hours is a “prayerbook” sort of.

I agree with a previous poster.

The best I have seen (complete, beautiful, sturdy) is “Blessed Be God” available at the Angelus Press website.

Incredible prayer book. The best in print in my opinion.

I’ve heard that the “Layman’s Prayer Book” by Philip J. Sheridan from the FSSP is pretty good, but I haven’t looked at myself. I’m not sure if anyone here is familiar with it…

Fr. Lasance’s New Roman Missal is wonderful. It has all the parts of the mass for weekdays and Sundays. It also has devotions and and various prayers as well. I would recommend getting it.
