This is my first post, so I’m sorry if it’s in the incorrect forum. A friend of mine has been saying for about a year that she wants a prayer book. Her birthday is coming up and I’ve decided to get her one, but the closest bookstore is about 45 minutes away.

What am I looking for? Are there different types? I would like to get her something of heirloom quality as she just had her first child a few months ago. Links would be helpful.

Thank you:)

Well, I am Eastern Rite, so I didn’t reply earlier today. I use this a lot. These are prayers of the Byzantine Church, but are very rich and not something they would necessarily be familiar wtih but would love. byzantines.net/byzantinepress/books.htm

My favorite is the Handbook of Prayers published by Scepter: scepterpublishers.org/product-exec/product_id/180/nm/Handbook_of_Prayers .

It has all the basic prayers (many in English and Latin side-by-side); a chapter on Catholic life (sacraments, commandments, indulgences, virtues, sin, etc.); the Mass in Latin and English (with extensive explanations); Eucharistic adoration; prayers for morning, midday, and evening; a guide to Confession; devotions to the Trinity, Jesus, Mary, and saints; blessings; prayers for those who are dying/have died; etc.

If you want something really old I have transcribed the authorised 1910 version of the Raccolta here along with a few other old and even older books, this is for personal use but all books can be downloaded in acrobat reader and in word.

I would recommend getting the Catholic Book of Prayers. It is fairly inexpensive and you can find it on just about every Catholic book site and bookstore
