Just wondering if anyone out there likes to pray by candlelight or using incense.

I love to pray by candlelight at my home altar, just creates a very special atmosphere.

I’m planning to get an incense burner as well if I can figure out what incense the church uses.

Anyone else like to do this?

Yes, I like both and have both on my personal altar. Not sure if there are specific incenses that are recommended for the laity to use, though.

I usually pray by candelight at night.

I find that with all the lights and sounds from my home turned off and just the flicker of a candle, that I can concentrate and focus a lot better. 🙂

I don’t because of asthma
never leave a candle burning unattended, even for a moment
if you use an incense burner and charcoal, make sure you have the room well ventilated

I have blessed candles that I often light for prayer. I find that it helps me to focus better on prayer and reduces temptations.

I also sometimes burn blessed incense. I bought it from a church supply store. They had many varieties, so I am guessing that the incense may not be the same in all churches. I ordered frankincense and myrrh. Frankincense as a sign of Christ’s divinity, and myrrh to portend His passion and death.

We use votive candles. We change color of the glass votive holder to correspond with the season. Right now its green for Ordinary time ,but today is the vigil of the solemnity of Corpus Christi, so the votive holders are red. No incense, daughter #1 has Cystic Fibrosis and smoke tends to aggravate things.

I have candles and incense. I am waiting on my frankincense and myrrh incense to come in from the Cukierski family. It’s a month’s supply.

i would say the best incense would be frankincense and whats a home altar I’ve never heard of one before

Praying by candlelight is basically how all the saints in the world prayed, at least before the last 80 years or so. There is nothing specially holy about it, but knowing that I am in the same misty, foggy din that they experienced their many visions and trials in… well, it’s familial. Sitting in the darkness of a power-outage with only one candle in the middle of the room really illustrates our Lord’s “light of the world” teaching!

I’ll be setting up a tiny home altar soon, with just one candle on a high stand in the middle standing over a cloth. On it I’ll keep my rosary and above the candlelight shall be my crucifix; to the right of the crucifix an icon of our Lady kissing the Christ-child, and to the left of the crucifix an icon of the Ascension or Resurrection. All three will be arranged in a triangle, so the Annunciation is in Mary, the Nativity is in Christ in the rightmost icon - the Crucifixion in the crucifix - the Resurrection and Ascension in the leftmost icon. The whole life of our Lord will be there in trinitarian form above the small, weak lighted candle that is my soul. How the events of That Life shall tower over my little light!
