Prayer - Eucharistic Adoration

Hello all,

I was fortunate enough to spend time at Eucharistic Adoration last evening. I highly recommend this if you have the opportunity. I took along my Raccolta and my Bible. I thought I would start a thread with prayers some of us like to pray during Adoration.

Here’s one to get this started, I will add more as I have time.

From the Raccolta:

“O my God, I firmly believe that Thou art really and corporally present in the Blessed Sacrament of the altar. I adore Thee here present from the very depths of my heart, and I worship Thy sacred presence with all possible humility. O my soul, what joy to have Jesus Christ always with us, and to be able to speak to Him, heart to heart, with all confidence. Grant, O Lord, that I, having adored Thy divine Majesty here on earth in this wonderful Sacrament, may be able to adore It eternally in heaven. Amen.”

Recently one of our priests said that nothing should be taken into the adoration chapel. No Rosary, no Bible. No prayer books. He said it is a time for complete focus on Jesus without being distracted by physical things taken in.

I disagree with your priest. I find adoration chapels as one of the best venues for spiritual books, scripture, and praying the rosary. Of course, that’s just my humble opinion.

I disagree with this as well. I find that my spiritual life is more fulfilling when I bring my Bible, LOTH, etc. with me because I’m not distracted and Jesus can help me focus on Him while focusing on what I am reading or praying. Also, all of our priests at our parish always bring their Bibles, etc. to Adoration and when they are just in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel.

I do like to sometimes not bring anything so that I can just focus on Jesus and pray, especially if there is a particular problem I want to talk to Him about, but I do enjoy the quiet for more fulfilling scripture reading, etc. too

Back to the OP, what I enjoy the most during Adoration is praying all 20 mysteries of the Rosary. I can truly concentrate and really meditate on each mystery.
 
Rule #1 - Pray as you can; not as you can’t. What works for others may not work for you and vice versa.

It’s not a bad idea, but it’s not good for everyone either. The rosary and the bible, when prayed, are both good methods of prayer.

If anything meditating in the immediate presence of Jesus is something even better, for then the Truth and Life Himself can enlighten our intellects and strengthen our wills as He acts imperceptibly by His grace on us.

Besides prayer, I’ve also heard of spiritual reading (i.e., the lives of the saints, or a book like the Imitation) being recommended for Adoration.

I bring along the book Praying In The Presence Of Our Lord For The Holy Souls, by Susan Tassone. This is one of a series of books dedicated to prayer during Eucherist Adoration. Published in paperback by Our Sunday Visitor, Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel is the series editor. 👍

I agree with some of the others…it depends on the person. The chapel I was in earlier today had a shelf of prayer books in the back you could use! And that parish is quite orthodox.
 
I don’t see why a prayer book, bible, etc. would be a distraction. I can read prayers from my Raccolta and set it aside, meditate and concentrate on the Eucharist, and return to prayer if I feel moved to. When I am meditating or listening to Christ, I am not distracted by a book next to me in the pew. Out of curiosity though, is there a format prescribed by the Church? I don’t ever remember seeing anything official regarding adoration.

Just in time, am going to Adoration tomorrow. (we are just beginning to have Adoration in our Parish again after a number of years)
 
My Adoration material is in my vehicle where it is - ALWAYS. We don’t have Perpetual Adoration, but, I work 1 mile from my home and St. Joseph’s Church is in between my home and work so I stop every day on my way to work because the church is un-locked. I sometimes can stay and hour and sometimes it’s just a few minutes, depending on my schedule. This is a prayer that I pray before anytime I pray.

Almighty Father, I place the Precious Blood of Jesus before my lips before I pray that all my prayers may be purified before they ascend to Thine Divine Altar. Amen.:gopray2:
 
This is a Prayer that is posted in all 3 of our businesses, we have Statues in Shrines in our offices/kitchen/stock room and this prayer is hanging from the shrines for us and our employees to read before we open the shops:

Almighty Father, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, I ask your grace and blessing on all I do today. Grant me the grace to act always as a true Christian, responsibe to Your Will. Help me to see and serve You in the people I meet today and to miss no opportunity of doing good in Your Name. Protect me and all those I love from all harm to soul or body this day so that some day we may Praise Your forever in Heaven in the presence of the Blessed Mother and all the Angels and Saints. Amen.
 
I think I know the businesses that you work for! If I have a choice, I always choose to stop at that store because of the owners public display of adoration to the Blessed Mother. My boyfriend is from Sulphur and after seeing quite of few of them around the area there I asked him about it and he told me the story. How wonderful! But I digress…back to the thread. I’m going through the RCIA process right now and attend Mass everyday at 5:15 after I leave my office; didn’t make it yesterday so I attended 6:30 Mass this morning. After it had ended, the most precious little woman came up to me and told her the Holy Spirit told her to ask me about signing up for an hour in the Adoration Chapel. To prove even more that nothing happens by chance, just last week after telling my sweet grandmother I was going through RCIA (and her telling me she was so glad I was “coming home”) she said maybe one day I would be able to take her place in adoration(which she’s doen for 20 yrs now!) since she’s become too ill to continue. I think this is a direct request from God to continue my family’s adoration tradition. 🙂

Thank you for sharing that – it’s wonderful!! I’ve always loved that song, and it really is true that Jesus is with us in the Holy Eucharist. Thanks so much. :yup:
 
I haven’t been to adoration enough, but I understand sometimes the Eucharist is outside the monstarance and sometimes inside…is that correct? And if It’s outside, then there MUST be someone present? Also, if It’s outside, where is it typically placed?

I think you are talking about exposed and unexposed.
The Eucharist is either inside the tabernacle or on the altar.
If the Eucharist is outside the tabernacle, on the alter, He will be put on the monstrance and He has to be constantly guarded, usually at least by two people.

Please note whenever we refer to the Eucharist, we use He, not it.
The Eucharist is the real body, blood, soul and divinity of our Lord.
We should always show our highest respect.

I have not had time to check out the original documents referenced, but according to this Q&A
published in Zenit, your priest is correct. Page about 1/2 way down and you will see the references to Adoration.

According to the link, about 1/2 page down, it says rosary, and may be other devotions, could be prayed during Eucharist Adoration.
