Seeing a loved one suffer from illness is always a distressing, frightening and sorrowful occasion. At the time of composing this, my own dear father is suffering from a chest infection, which has aggravated his COPD. After praying a Rosary for him, his suffering seems to have alleviated a bit. For this, I humbly rejoice in the maternal intercession of Our Lady, Health of the Sick and in the Passion of Our Lord.
However, I pause to remember all my brethren who have a loved one who is suffering, whether temporally or permanently.
Remember, dearest brethren, that the Most Merciful Saviour is never far from us, even though He may withdraw Himself from us so that we may increase our Faith. Indeed, He may even plunge a soul into a feeling of despair, not to cause pain or maleficence, but to cause the soul to be raised ever higher to perfection and to unite themselves even more intimately to the Sorrowful Passion that He endured for us.
Therefore, venerable brethren, place yourself and your loved one beneath the Holy and Life-Giving Cross of Jesus Christ, and raise your eyes unto Him, suffering for you. Once there, unite yourself to Him, knowing that He is your one Love, your one Desire, and the Object of your life. Then, offer to Him these prayers, beseeching Him to spare and to forgive, so that His Most Holy Name may be ever more glorified, adored and proclaimed in the Church and in the world.
Prayers to Our Lord
O Most Holy Wound of the Right Hand of Christ, I place my [relative] under Thy Protection, beseeching Thee to pour upon [him/her] Thy Most Precious Blood, the same which secured the salvation of Holy Mother Church. Be Thou [his/her] Salvation, and purify [his/her] of all [his/her] offences. O Most Holy Wound of the Right Hand of Christ, I trust in Thee!
O Most Holy Wound of the Left Hand of Christ, I place my [relative] under Thy Protection, beseeching Thee to pour upon [him/her] Thy Most Precious Blood, the same which secured the salvation of Holy Mother Church. Be Thou [his/her] Health, and purify [him/her] of all [his/her] offences. O Most Holy Wound of the Left Hand of Christ, I trust in Thee!
O Most Holy Wound of the Right Foot of Christ, I place my [relative] under Thy Protection, beseeching Thee to pour upon [him/her] Thy Most Precious Blood, the same which secured the salvation of Holy Mother Church. Be Thou [his/her] Hope, and purify [him/her] of all [his/her] offences. O Most Holy Wound of the Right Foot of Christ, I trust in Thee!
O Most Holy Wound of the Left Foot of Christ, I place my [relative] under Thy Protection, beseeching Thee to pour upon [him/her] Thy Most Precious Blood, the same which secured the salvation of Holy Mother Church. Be Thou [his/her] Help, and purify [him/her] of all [his/her] offences. O Most Holy Wound of the Left Foot of Christ, I trust in Thee!
O Most Holy Wound of the Heart of Christ, I place my [relative] under Thy Protection, beseeching Thee to pour upon [him/her] Thy Most Precious Blood, the same which secured the salvation of Holy Mother Church. Be Thou [his/her] Hiding-place, and purify [him/her] of all [his/her] offences. O Most Holy Wound of the Heart of Christ, I trust in Thee!
O Most Sacred Heart, having placed my [relative] under the protection of Thy Five Most Holy Wounds, be Thou still more merciful. Send Thy holy Angels to [his/her] side, to administer Thy Mercy. Remember, O Good Jesus, how those same Angels helped Thee, and how Thou wast refreshed by them. So do Thou send forth from the Eternal Father, in the Unity of the Holy Ghost, those very Angels, especially St. Raphael, Prince of Healing, and by Thy Infinite Grace, may this suffering come either to a speedy end, or that [he/she] who suffers may bear it even more patiently, knowing that in the Last Day Thou wilt reward all who suffer gladly for Thee. O Sacred Heart, have mercy! Amen
Prayer to Our Lady, Health of the Sick
O Most Holy Virgin, Health of the Sick, look with kindness on those who suffer, especially on my [relative]. I have entreated thy Divine Son, filled with hope that He will answer favourably. But since it would be most dishonourable to forget thee, O Glorious Lady, I now turn to thee. I suffer not to despair of help, knowing that thou art the most powerful intercessor before Christ, and the Most Loving Mother of both God and of man. Since therefore, by virtue of my baptism, I have become a [brother/sister] to God Incarnate, I am also thy [son/daughter], and since thou art most famous in this Holy Church, and thy power is spread abroad, to the glory of the Most Holy Trinity, tarry not in this request, so that I may worthily proclaim thee, O Queen of Heaven. I choose thee as my Patroness in this matter, and deliver to thee most worthy praise for thy mediation.
O Health of the Sick, administer the balm of health to this suffering [servant/handmaid], who groans under the weight of [his/her] cross. By the power granted thee by Almighty God Himself, command this sickness to leave this patient of God. Let this house be visited by thee, and all the Court of Heaven. Hereafter, I shall devote myself to a greater piety and devotion to thee, telling all of thy power, and paying my service to God, Who giveth and Who taketh away, Who raiseth and Who crusheth. Amen
