Does anyone know a good traditional prayer for before and/or after Bible Study? I’m going to be the facilitator for a group of young adults starting in October, and while I’ll probably tap into the liturgical calendar for some prayers, I’d also want one or two fall-back prayers.

Let us remember that the all-wise God is with us as we pray.

John 17:25-6

Jesus once prayed in this way:

Upright One, I have made your name know to them and will continue to make it known, so that the love with which you loved me may be in them, and so that I may be in them.

God of all wisdom, open our heart and mind to your name, to your mercy, so that we can finally acknowledge that all along you have loved us. May we be warmed and empowered by your love.

But first, teach us to know you through listening to your words spoken and modeled by Jesus. He is always with us to teach and guide us. Upright one, may we know your name.

This prayer we offer to you, Spirit of wisdom and understanding, through your Son Jesus Christ.

Amen.

From: --Carl Koch, 150 Opening and Closing Prayers

Traditional:

Come Holy Spirit
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.

O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, Through Christ Our Lord, Amen.
