This evening at work, I had a little girl walk up, faded blanket in one hand, chubby cheeks red and teary. Probably about four or five?
She goes, “C-Can you h-h-help?” She kept looking all around, Standing on tiptoe, trying to see past the adults rushing by, “Can’t find m-my mommy.”
I crouched down to her level, “Of course I can, don’t worry, we’ll find your mommy!”
(Meanwhile, inside I was kinda panicking. First time I’ve ever been in this situation!
)
I offered her my hand, trying to look confident even though my mind was in a million different directions- I was worried about somebody grabbin’ her, there’s a lotta scary people out there after all.
And she took my hand. Walked with me through the store to the desk up front.
“‘Was’ yer name?” Little girl asked,
“Tabby!”
“Tab-eeeeee.” She repeated. I’m glad she approved.
Well- you guys- this little girl was up at the desk- FOR TWO HOURS.
They let me stay with her while they looked for the mom, because she seemed comfy with me, and when they tried to tell me to go back to my area, she started to cry.
(Cue my heart, cracking into pieces)
Finally, finally, the mother walked up. And instead of being happy…
She was ANGRY.
“I let her run around by herself all the time!!” The lady growled,” I TOLD her to entertain herself.”
Dear God.
Before the baby left with her, she (Little one) -gave me a hug. And I can’t stop thinking about that little girl, what her life is like at home, etc.
As they were leaving, I saw her mother swat her on the rear.
And the thing is, the little one did the RIGHT thing. She felt unsafe, and so she found an adult to help.
Please, pray for this child, and her siblings, if there are any, and the mother too- that maybe she will have a change of heart, and that the kids will be safe.

Stuff like this…it weighs on the heart an awful lot.
