Prayer for the dead: "Rest in Peace"

It seems pretty clear to me that Paul is praying for the dead in 2 Timothy 1:16 however, as some point out in this thread - it is debatable.

…so what about “Rest in Peace”?

I’ve heard Protestants say it at funerals and in other talk about deceased folk - and am aware of it’s common use on headstones.

…so what are they meaning by it in their own minds?

If you read further, catholica, specifically in verse 18, you will find that Paul asks that “he will find mercy from the Lord on “that” day” … Onesiphorus was not dead yet. Paul was asking mercy for him from the Lord, at his death, because he helped Paul in his ministry.
