To Choose a Vocation
Holy Mother of the wise election,
I pray for your patronage,
amazed at the clarity you had
in discerning and accepting
the words of the divine messenger.
You know how difficult it is
to choose the right path in life,
to discover what you were born for,
since when you make a decision
you put your happiness
in this life
and for all eternity
at risk.
I know I must prudently
and very carefully
search for signs
that will show the right way,
being very aware
that it is not a matter of liking or disliking
but of finding the best path for me.
Precisely that is what it’s all about,
my life.
What is excellent for someone else
may well not be good for me.
I want to choose
without error,
for I am convinced
that this is essential
for my fulfillment
according to God’s plan.
But the noises of the world,
the lack of habit,
the preconceived ideas,
and even the words
of people with good intentions
who see only the surface
without understanding
what I am actually living,
make it difficult to choose correctly
and may incline me dangerously
to a way of life
for which I was not born
and in which I would be out of place.
I know I must act prudently,
listening to opinions,
but without letting them decide for me,
looking always for the divine plan,
without being impressed
by apparent temporary benefit
that perhaps now seems attractive,
nor by what I see as an ideal future,
but discerning realistically
what should lie ahead for me tomorrow
according to my own nature and condition.
O holy Mother of the wise election!
Watch over my steps,
guide me on the right road, and
obtain for me divine help
so that I can freely make a good choice.
On my part, I offer to be as serene as possible,
to avoid momentary infactuations,
to reflect seriously,
to know and assess the different callings
and their conditions,
to seek for the signs
of the road I must travel,
to consult freely with prudent people,
to pray with perseverance,
asking for enlightenment,
and, in general,
to do as much as I can
to cooperate with God’s grace
so as to make a good choice.
Amen.
