Most Blessed Lord Jesus, our Life, our Advocate, our Friend, we come before you today in order to plead the case for all those who are lonely, alienated, estranged, disaffected, disconnected from the world, disenfranchised, lost and forlorn; we pray for those who have been forgotten by others and for those who have forgotten themselves.
Remember, Most Gracious God, how when you planted Adam in the Garden, you deemed it wise and fitting that he should not live alone, and yet through man’s sinfulness, through his pride and eagerness for self-fulfillment, our connections with one another have been severed, there is great division, and as both men and women seek so earnestly for the company of others, what we discover is that we barely know ourselves and our Creator. Look on us tenderly, Lord, and have mercy as the blind continue to lead the blind!
And so, we humbly ask that you be with those who are currently suffering from acute depression, anxiety, and other psychological disorders, who cannot help but be convinced of their isolation; we pray for those who are considering suicide, that they may see that no man is an island nor are they without assistance if only they would ask; we pray for those who are unable to forgive themselves for wrongs which they’ve done to themselves and to others as they toss and tumble through the storms of self-loathing, despising even themselves, unable to know true love and thus feeling alone; we pray for those who are mentally or physically handicapped, that they may not feel like outcasts when the rest of us stare in childlike curiosity, fearfully; we pray for drug addicts and alcoholics that they may see the transience of getting high; we pray for the elderly, especially those who are confined to their homes or hospital beds with no loved ones left to call on them, those who have been seemingly forgotten by the world; we pray for those who are now in the final moments of death, that they may come to see that with you, Lord, no one has to die alone; we pray for all prisoners of war, each one by name, no matter what nationality or political purpose, as they sojourn in strange, harsh, inhospitable lands away from friends, family, and compatriots; we pray for all the incarcerated, especially those who have served more than enough time for their crimes but who remain due to truly criminal injustices; we pray for those men and women who gives their bodies to the sex industry, either in pornography, dancing, or prostitution, that they may see that no matter how much attention is lavished upon the body, the soul is detrimentally affected and becomes even more anguished by its neglect; we pray for the sex slaves who, through human trafficking, who must wreck their consciences in order to preserve their lives; we pray for those who have been raped, especially those who are afraid to come forward since it might be a loved one who committed the crime; we pray for those people in abusive relationships, that they may know true love; we pray for those who have nobody to pray for them; and we pray for one another as we each face our own daily trials in life that we may rightfully see that we are not alone in our suffering, pain and detriment.
Dear Jesus, it is hard for us to understand why you allow so much suffering and loneliness in the world, and yet what is man that you are mindful of him? Indeed, Lord, you are completely aware of the extent of our loneliness and isolation since that is what you experienced as you hung upon the Cross, feeling forsaken by both God and men. Who can say that our God is not a compassionate God able to sympathize with our weaknesses? No, Lord, you have been tested like us in every way, yet remain without sin. Hear our prayer then, and emancipate us from the chains which we continually bind ourselves by! We ask this in your Most Holy Name, who lives and dwells with the Father and Holy Spirit. Amen.
