Prayer for those who are in the way of Hurricane Gustav

We appreciate all the prayers. The crowd at Mass this morning was lighter than usual.

The opening song was the 2nd verse of Be Not Afraid. (You shall walk through raging waters…) Father thanked us all for being there. He always manages to relate the homily to the readings.

Do not conform yourselves to this age
but be transformed by the renewal of your mind,
that you may discern what is the will of God,
what is good and pleasing and perfect.

He said that many times in the next few days we will have the opportunity to show impatience, selfishness, etc or what is good and pleasing and perfect to God - patience, selflessness, forgiveness.

Be not afraid!

God is with us!

Daily Mass is cancelled until at least Wednesday. Bummer. Hopefully I can find one somewhere - at least Monday, if conditions permit.

I will be angey at you if you try to go out in this storm!! We just finished boarding up and putting tape on the windows. I have set up a little shrine that my grandfather claims to have very saint! :rolleyes: But we are all having a prayer service twice a day. During this whole storm I am keeping a candel lit in front of my Sacred Heart statue because of a story that my great-grandma told me. She said when she was a little girl they had a really bad hurricane come so her mom put up a SH in the living room and kept a flame burning the whole time. She said that on each side of her house the houses were leveled. So I am keeping up with this pious practice! And I encourage you to do the same!
 
Good news is that Gustav has weakened to a low cat.3 with winds at 115mph and a central pressure of 957mb or 28.25in. It is expected to gain little strength over the next 19 hours and make landfall around noon Monday morning somewhere near Terrebonne and St. Mary Parishes. Needless to say it is still a very dangerous situation but it has improved in the last 24 hrs. Though Gustav is moving at 18mph it will slow down very much after landfall making flooding an issue not just in NOLA but in northern parts of the state as well as parts of eastern Texas.
 
Through the prayers of the Theotokos and all the saints, O Christ our God have mercy on all those in the path of the hurricane.

I won’t go out in the storm! When I wrote that I would like to go to Mass, I was expecting it to arrive much later in the day. However, it looks like we can expect 20mph winds by 7 am which will gradually increase to 50-60 mph during the evening. No sense being stupid.

We have boarded up, stocked up, put the chainsaws in the house and made sure the generator works. We’re ready! No burning candles, though. Too much clutter. I’d be likely to burn the house down!

Can you see the prayers working already?

yes i had just finished praying to Fr. Seelos when they announced that it had weakened! it is still a very dangerous storm though! my priest shared a native american proverb this morning but i can’t remember it excatly. but it said something like do all you can to protect yourself and trust in god. something about growing away from the rocks.🤷
 
Lord, Jesus Christ, Who calmed the storm, have mercy on those in the path of Hurricane Gustav.
 
Lord God, Creator & King of the universe, I join the hearts & minds in prayer of those who have prayed here, & those who pray elsewhere for the people of the Gulf Coast. I humbly ask that you spare them the full effects of such death & destruction, but mostly I plead for your mercy. Come Holy Spirit, to grant them strength & courage. All according to your will, in the name of your Risen Son, Our Lord Christ Jesus.
 
Most definitely praying. We spent all day getting to Jackson MS, so now all we have to worry about is whether or not there will be a home to go back to; there wasn’t last time so I guess maybe I’ve just inherited the luck of the Irish. 🤷
 
Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Our Lady of Prompt Succor, intercede for those in the path of the storm!
 
It seems like God answered our prayers, in downgrading the size of the hurricane, and I haven’t heard of anyone’s life being lost…and hopefully injuries are minimal too. I know the coastal areas had serious damage and there still are plenty of power outages, but I think now we need to combine our prayers in asking God to protect the Southeast and Florida area from Hurricane Hanna.
