Dear Reader,

It is getting cold where I live! Would you join me in prayer so that our (this also includes you) winter is a “mild” one? There has to be snow, and the farmers’ fields need water; however, it hopefully does not include three feet (3’) of snow and Nor’easters this winter!

By the way, have a blessed and happy feast of Our Lady of the Pillar tomorrow,
October 12!

Fall is here and the winter cold is coming to us, Lord – as if You did not already know it! Sorry! Am asking for a winter without 3’ of snow. People do have difficulties with six inches. Could you spread the snow out and make the snow only three inches per episode? Please also could You not have it accumulate? With all that, please remember the farmers and their needs for their fields. Please hear our prayers and the prayers of those interceding for us.

Prayer to St. Isidore*

Dear Isidore, you know how normal it is to cultivate the land for you were employed as a farm laborer for the greater part of your life. Although you received God’s help materially through Angels in the field, all farmers are aided spiritually to see the wonders God has strewn on this earth. Encourage all farmers in their labors and help them to feed numerous people. Amen.

Hymn for the Novena to St. Isidore

O Lord, as You have made the earth,
To man and beast have given birth
Have given sun and rain that thence
The soil might give them sustenance:

We beg You make us willing to
Perform the law we get from You,
That work of ours and grace of Yours
May bring the increase that endures.

Through Jesus Christ let this be done
Who lives and reigns, our Lord, Your Son,
Whom with the Spirit we adore,
One God with You forevermore.

A PRAYER
IN WINTER

Dear Lord, the summer is over and gone,
and the harvest is once more past.
All the wealth and warmth of the summer sun
is marvelously packaged now,
in seed and fruit and vegetable,
and stored away in bins and cribs and basements.

Thank You, dear, generous God,
for all Your goodness
and for all Your gifts.
All summer long You are working for us,
storing heat and health and
nourishment in the fields and woods.
Now, when the air is cold,
and there is no fruitfulness in the earth,
we can live on what the summer
and the harvest have stored up for us.

Thank You for Your unnumbered kindnesses to us, dear God.
Help us to make good use of the riches of the earth.
Help us to be generous,
even as You are,
and always avoid selfishness and greed.

Help us, too,
to store up spiritual wealth in the summer of this life,
while we can yet work.
Otherwise life’s autumn will come,
death will call us,
a spiritual winter will set in
and we shall be found poor
and unsheltered not for one season only,
but for the winters of eternity.

Lord, we trust in You, that,
cooperating with Your many graces,
we may make good use now of our rich opportunities.
And may we then reap a rich spiritual harvest
which we will enjoy with You and Your saints
in the eternal spring and summer of heaven.

Amen.

***Prayer to the Holy Spirit***
by Saint Antiochus
O Holy Spirit,
most merciful Comforter:
You proceed from the Father
in a manner beyond our understanding.
Come, I beseech You,
and take up your abode in my heart.
Purify and cleanse me from all sin,
and sanctify my soul.
Cleanse it from every impurity,
water its dryness,
melt its coldness,
and save it from its sinful ways.
Make me truly humble and resigned,
that I may be pleasing to You,
and that You might abide with me forever.
Most Blessed Light,
most Amiable Light,
enlighten me.
O Rapturous Joy of Paradise,
Fount of Purest Delight,
My God, give yourself to me
and kindle in my innermost soul the fire of Your love.
My Lord, instruct, direct,
and defend me in all things.
Give me strength against all immoderate fears
and against despondency.
Bestow upon me a true faith,
a firm hope,
and a sincere and a perfect love.
Grant that I always do Your Most Gracious Will.
Amen.

***Prayer for All Virtues***

O Almighty and all-knowing God,
without beginning or end,
who art the giver, preserver, and rewarder of all virtue:

Grant me to stand firm on the solid foundation of faith,
be protected by the invincible shield of hope,
and be adorned by the nuptial garment of charity;

Grant me by justice to obey thee,
by prudence to resist the crafts of the Devil,
by temperance to hold to moderation,
by fortitude to bear adversity with patience;

Grant that the goods that I have I may share liberally
with those who have not,
and the good that I do not have I may seek with humility
from those who have;

Grant that I may truly recognize the guilt of the evil I have done,
and bear with equanimity the punishments I have deserved;
that I may never lust after the goods of my neighbour,
but always give thanks to thee for all thy good gifts...

Plant in me, O Lord, all thy virtues,
that in divine matters I might be devout,
in human affairs wise,
and in the proper needs of the flesh onerous to no one...

And grant that I may never rush to do things hastily,
nor balk to do things demanding,
so that I neither yearn for things too soon,
nor desert things before they are finished.
Amen.
