Last week, 3 June, there were several explosions at one of our gas suppliers (LNG, LPG, not petrol) plants on Varanus Island. They supply 1/3 of the state’s gas and their facilities were severely damaged. It is going to take at least 2 months for them to get back into production.
This has flowed on to our electricity generating capabilities, and in turn on to industry with several mining companies shutting down their ore processing plants and other factories ceasing production due to lack of fuel. Everyone is scrambling for generators and diesel, and diesel is at the highest price it has ever been at almost $2.00 a litre. And, it is winter.
Hundreds of people have been laid off and thousands more jobs are at risk.
