Hello all,
I am a college student who has been struggling with frequent pornography and masturbation for over 5 years. It’s been a difficult struggle, but during my first year at college, I started to seriously win the battle, going a few months without breaking. Second semester was more difficult, and I fell more often, and that pattern has stuck at home over the summer. I have read everything that I can find about this topic, am aware of how grave it is, and frequent the confessional, but for some reason, I still cannot shake it completely. Unfortunately, I did not become aware of how serious the church treats this until after I had been addicted for some time, which gives me mixed feelings about my struggle with it, it feels unfair (which might sound immature). I guess that I’m just looking for prayers and more detailed advice about finishing off the battle. I can go clean for shorter periods of time, but I want to put the last nail in the coffin on this as I have a wonderful girlfriend, and if I cannot shake this problem, I know there will be issues in the future. I have no issues with purity with her, but my addiction is holding me back. I know that I cannot finish this without help from God, and from other people who have suggestions/experience for me.
Thank you for any advice or prayers that can be offered, please keep me, and all others in my situation in your prayers.

You will be in my prayers, Patriot16. Your desire to kick this habit is a grace from God!!

I don’t have personal experience with your particular addiction, but I can suggest a book/addiction recovery system that has helped a tremendous number of people. I’ve read the book and it’s excellent. The book is Rational Recovery by Jack Trimpey.

It began as a technique for alcohol/drug addiction, but was then found to successfully apply to many other addictions including pornography.

It’s not a faith-based system, nor is it an “addiction is a disease” based system. It’s a very simple yet scientific approach to the problem of addiction–specifically based on neuroscience.

It focuses on understanding how addictions affect the brain, and gives very straightforward advice on how to reclaim control of (or re-wire, in a sense) the addicted brain.

Below is the link to the author’s site. Keep praying and trying, Patriot, and with His grace you will be healed!!

***Prayer to the Holy Spirit by Saint Antiochus ***
O Holy Spirit,
most merciful Comforter:
You proceed from the Father
in a manner beyond our understanding.
Come, I beseech You,
and take up your abode in my heart.
Purify and cleanse me from all sin,
and sanctify my soul.
Cleanse it from every impurity,
water its dryness,
melt its coldness,
and save it from its sinful ways.
Make me truly humble and resigned,
that I may be pleasing to You,
and that You might abide with me forever.
Most Blessed Light,
most Amiable Light,
enlighten me.
O Rapturous Joy of Paradise,
Fount of Purest Delight,
My God, give yourself to me
and kindle in my innermost soul the fire of Your love.
My Lord, instruct, direct,
and defend me in all things.
Give me strength against all immoderate fears
and against despondency.
Bestow upon me a true faith,
a firm hope,
and a sincere and a perfect love.
Grant that I always do Your Most Gracious Will.
Amen.

Acordaos (Memorare)*
*Acordaos, ¡oh piadosísima Virgen María!,
que jamás se ha oído decir
que ninguno de los que han acudido
a vuestra protección,
implorando vuestro auxilio,
antes bien, escuchadlas
y acogedlas benignamente. Amén.

I am definitely praying for you that God Blesses you with the strength to fight this sinful act and to make amends for these years of masturbation/pornography with a focus on staying chaste and saving sexual acts with a spouse for marriage

Litany of Humility
:signofcross:
O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.
From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved…
From the desire of being extolled …
From the desire of being honored …
From the desire of being praised …
From the desire of being preferred to others…
From the desire of being consulted …
From the desire of being approved …
From the fear of being humiliated …
From the fear of being despised…
From the fear of suffering rebukes …
From the fear of being calumniated …
From the fear of being forgotten …
From the fear of being ridiculed …
From the fear of being wronged …
From the fear of being suspected …

That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I …
That, in the opinion of the world,
others may increase and I may decrease …
That others may be chosen and I set aside …
That others may be praised and I unnoticed …
That others may be preferred to me in everything…
That others may become holier than I, provided that I may become as holy as I should…

Rafael Cardinal Merry del Val (1865-1930),
Secretary of State for Pope Saint Pius X

ACT OF CONTRITION

Forgive me my sins, O Lord,
forgive me my sins;
the sins of my youth,
the sins of my age,
the sins of my soul,
the sins of my body;
my idle sins,
my serious voluntary sins;
the sins I know,
the sins I do not know;
the sins I have concealed for so long,
and which are now hidden from my memory.

I am truly sorry for every sin, mortal and venial,
for all the sins of my childhood up to the present hour.

I know my sins have wounded Thy Tender Heart,
O My Savior, let me be freed from the bonds of evil through
the most bitter Passion of My Redeemer. Amen.

O My Jesus, forget and forgive what I have been. Amen.

Prayer for the Intercession

of St. Pio of Pietrelcina

:signofcross:
O God, you gave St. Pio of Pietrelcina,
Capuchin priest, the great privilege of
participating in a unique way in the
passion of Your Son. Grant Patriot through
his intercession the grace of purity of mind, heart, and body
which he ardently desires.
Above all, grant him the grace
of living in conformity with the death
of Jesus so that he may one day arrive at
the glory of the resurrection.
Amen
Glory be to the Father. . . (three times)

:signofcross:
Let Nothing Disturb You
Let nothing disturb you
Let nothing frighten you,
All things are passing away:
God never changes.

Patience,
Obtains all things,
Whoever has God
Lacks nothing:
God alone suffices.

In Roman Catholic teaching, anoccasionofsinis an external set of circumstances—whether of things or persons—which either because of their special nature or because of the frailty common to humanity or peculiar to some individual, incite or entice one to sin.

What you are experiencing is not uncommon, as a young man I can relate. I’ve been through that phase myself, especially when I was doing my undergrad. The very fact that you want to change shows that there is a genuine desire for conversion. DO NOT lose heart! God will come to your assistance.

I myself had a prolonged battle with masturbation and sins of the flesh, and continue to struggle with lust from time to time. (I am engaged.)

Praying for God’s continued guidance and for Him to strengthen in your battles. Praying for the grace of chastity for you!

Please pray the Rosary everyday, and frequent Confession is a great aid! Daily Mass is a great weapon against sins of the flesh; frequent/daily communion acts as an accountability measure because you must be in a state of grace to receieve the Eucharist.

I’ll keep you in my Rosary intentions.

As far as practical advice is concerned, refrain from near occasions of sin with your girlfriend and also keep yourself occupied in order get away from the porn.

Continue fighting the good fight!

God bless and be with you!

(Please pray for me too!)

Joining you in prayers. . . .
