My parish has a prayer service on Fridays. The book used is something like “Book of Christian prayer” or something like that.

I found some parts easy to follow along. But I have a feeling some of the prayers were memorized ones as I tried searching to no avail. So I’m wondering there are any guesses as to what they may have been. (And I do realize there’s little to go on.)

Also, I felt a little, this isn’t really the right word but it’s close, robotic reading prayers fromthe book. So for those who do enjoy prayer services, I’m wondering if you have suggestions on how to have it more from the heart.

Thanks in advance. I’m planning to give it another try this Friday and it was nice to receive a consecrated host, which is why I’m trying to see if there’s something I can do to make it a better experience for me.

From what I can find it’s the Divine Office (Liturgy of the Hours).

If you are looking for something to follow with Laudate is good, but if you are willing to spend money I would recommend Universalis.

Advice I’ve heard to make it more meaningful is try to think of people the psalm would mean something to.

With following, are you referring to it as a whole? Or just the divine office? I’m just wondering since they already have books out. (I’ll have to look to see if those books have the LOTH.)

From what I can see the book of Christian Prayer is the LOTH. I would guess you’re saying Vespers, but I could be wrong.

Ah. (And there are some psalms.) As for Vespers, it’s a morning service. So from my Google search saying those are evening, I’m assuming no. Though I will admit I know almost nothing about the LOTH other than that they’re a Catholic prayer.

Was this a Liturgy of the Word with Communion ?

It was listed as a prayer service. We did receive communion. The day’s Mass readings were not read.

The only option for receiving the Eucharist outside mass is the Rite for Distributing Holy Communion Outside of Mass with Celebration of the Word found in the book Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharist Outside Mass. It should include readings, either the readings of the day or those of a ritual mass or votive mass.

The Liturgy of the Hours prayed communally does not include receiving the Eucharist.

Not for what you describe. If they are distributing communion then they should be using the book I referenced above.

The Book of Christian Prayer is the Liturgy of the Hours.

It is possible they did both-- a communion service followed by the LOTH our vice versa, LOTH followed by a communion service. But the communion service needs to follow the rubrics.

I’m looking at the document and
  1. Whenever the Rite for Distributing Holy Communion Outside Mass (italics in original) with a Celebration of the Word is scheduled on a weekday, every effort must be undertaken to avoid any confusion between this celebration and the Mass. Indeed, such celebrations should encourage the faithful to be present at and to participate in the celebration of the Eucharist.
My uneducated reading is wondering if the Celebration of the Word is different from the Rite for Distributing. @FrDavid96, would you be able to offer clarification?

I’m wanting to give my parish the benefit of the doubt.

Lauds then.

You probably say the Benedictius (blessed are you Lord God of Israel) at some point)

Since people seem to be guessing what is going on, and I agree you should give your parish the benefit of the doubt could you ask the leader of the service what they are using? Then I think you can get a better answer on how to get more out of it.
Also good for you for going and wanting to get more out of it. God bless you.
