It is his desire for a suitable spouse as recounted in an 1835 letter to a friend:*My poor head has already suffered much… Still, for some time now I have been experiencing the first signs of a new life of sentiment and I am alarmed: I sense within me a great void, which neither friendship nor study can fill. I do not know who will fill it: God, or a creature? If it is to be a creature, then I pray that it will be later, when I am worthy of her.
