St Raphael loving patron of those seeking a marriage partner, help me in this supreme decision of my life. Find for me as a helpmate in life the person whose character may reflect some of the traits of Jesus and Mary. May she be upright, loyal, pure, sincere and noble so that with united efforts and chaste and unselfish love we both may strive to perfect ourselves in soul and body, as well as the children it may please God to entrust to our care, St Raphael angel of chaste courtship bless our friendship and our love so that sin may have no part of it. Perhaps some will find the following prayer beneficial. It is the prayer of Frédéric Ozanam, principal founder of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and beatified Aug. 22, 1997. It is his desire for a suitable spouse as recounted in an 1835 letter to a friend:*My poor head has already suffered much… Still, for some time now I have been experiencing the first signs of a new life of sentiment and I am alarmed: I sense within me a great void, which neither friendship nor study can fill. I do not know who will fill it: God, or a creature? If it is to be a creature, then I pray that it will be later, when I am worthy of her. I pray that, besides what she brings with her by way of external charm and material goods, there will be no room for any regret, but above all I pray that she will be a pure soul, quite different from me; that she will draw me upward and not downward; that she will be magnanimous, since I am so often mean and petty; that she will be zealous for the faith, since I am so often lukewarm about God’s concerns.*This was written 2 years after he founded the Society, which suggests a possible humility in his self-criticism.
