Prayer to Biblical 'Characters'

Characters is probably not the best word, but I will use it anyway…
According to a post I saw some time ago in the Ask an Apologist forum (I’m sure it could be found with some searching effort) it is alright to ask Biblical 'character’s and prophets for their prayers, in the same way as we ask the Blessed Mother and the saints.
My question is… has anyone ever done this, or at least seen it practiced? I haven’t, and I’m curious why.
