Yes. I was talking about contemplative prayer as an invitation to the Holy Spirit to prepare us to be transformed. To get our “wedding attire” on for the feast, maybe.

Prayer to the H.S. I don’t do that much but I have to go awk for a bit so maybe I’ll think of how to define it more interestingly.

Yes I would be very much interested in this. Of all the mystical traditions I know of this this the only place I have come across the term “Contemplative prayer”. Sounds like Teresa of Avila. But I don’t have any practical knowledge.

Hi again bill,

I was thinking more about this post, and I wanted to add that I will particularly pray to the Holy Spirit when I would like an increase in one of His particular gifts, too.

For example, let’s say that I would like an increase in Wisdom, for example. I will ask for that and pray for an increase in Wisdom.

I like to pray that God make me a better person, and He will definitely answer those prayers. If you ask for that, you will be surprised at how that changes you. It can be a painful process though, too.

Here is a link about the Gifts of the Spirit, in case anyone is interested in reading about them:

Here is a link about the Twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit, in case anyone is interested in reading about them:

So what about this contemplative prayer? How is it done? Is there a link or a comment someone might have concerning it? Any practical experience? What are we doing during adoration before the host in the monstrance?

That book I mentioned earlier, “Armchair Mystic,” gives a very realistic description of contemplative prayer, how to do it, what to do when it seems like you’re not doing it right and so on. It also covers recited and made-up vocal prayers, but the real aim is to expose beginning seminary students to the practice in a way that isn’t just theoretical mumbo-jumbo to the average reader.
