Prayer to Saints

Hi,

My neighbor, who is Catholic, told me should would pray to Saint Anthony for me because I was hoping for a raise/promotion at work. Is it normal to pray to saints for these?

Why do some people pray to a particular saint for particular issues? Like if you lose something pray to so and so. Is this Catholic teaching or just something some Catholics do.

Saints are asked for their prayers to join ours to God - that is, we ask them to pray for us and with us.
The reason particular Saints are invoced for particular needs is that during their mortal life they were known for specific gifts and are known as “Patron Saints” for those needs.

For example, I often pray to Saint Jude who is known as the Patron Saint of lost causes because an apostle his name was mistakenly associated with Judas.
