Is it proper to pray the Prayer to St. Michael during Mass? We say it when the priest sits down after Communion. I have devotion to St. Michael and I am glad we are saying it for the safe return of our soldiers, but shouldn’t it be said after Mass like they do on EWTN?

"…For the greater part of this century, the faithful recited the prayer to St. Michael at the end of the Mass.

Pope Leo XIII (d. 1903) had a prophetic vision of the coming century of sorrow and war. After celebrating Mass, the Holy Father was conferring with his cardinals. Suddenly, he fell to the floor. The cardinals immediately called for a doctor. No pulse was detected, and the Holy Father was feared dead. Just as suddenly, Pope Leo awoke and said, “What a horrible picture I was permitted to see!” In this vision, God gave Satan the choice of one century in which to do his worst work against the Church. The devil chose the twentieth century. So moved was the Holy Father from this vision that he composed the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel…Pope Leo ordered this prayer said at the conclusion of Mass in 1886. (When Pope Paul VI issued the *Novus Ordo *of the Mass in 1968, the prayer to St. Michael and reading of the “last gospel” at the end of the Mass were suppressed.)

In the Spring of 1994, our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, urged the faithful to offer the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel. He also made the strong suggestion that the recitation of the prayer be instituted at Mass once again. (Note that the Holy Father did not mandate the recitation of the prayer at Mass.) Clearly, the Holy Father was responding to the grave evils we see present in our world — the sins of abortion, euthanasia, terrorism, genocide, and the like. As we approach the millennium, Satan and the other fallen angels are doing their best to lead souls to Hell. We need the help of St. Michael! For this reason, many parishes have erected a shrine in St. Michael’s honor or offer the prayer at the end of Mass or after the petitions."

Why after Communion, instead of at the end of Mass? I couldn’t tell you. Perhaps the pastor feels that there is such a “Mass Exodus” at the end that he’d better do it while everyone is still “prayerful.”

“this century” would have been last century in the quoted post by the way.

This was part of what was called the Leontine Prayers recited at the end of a low Mass. If you attend a low Mass in accordance with the 1962 Missal this will still probably be the case, though it is not required. I rather like ending Mass this way.

After the Last Gospel and the Dismissal, rather than everyone just leaving, we kneel, and say together

Three Hail Marys

The Salve Regina

the priest then recites this prayer
O God, our refuge and our strength, look down with favor upon Thy people who cry to Thee, and through the intercession of the glorious and immaculate Virgin Mary Mother of God, of her spouse, blessed Joseph, of Thy holy apostles Peter and Paul, and al the saints, mercifully and graciously hear the prayers which we pour forth to Thee for the conversion of sinners, and for the liberty and exaltation of holy Mother Church. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen

Then together we recite the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

Followed by

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us (three times)

This is omitted after High Mass - probably because of the length of time it takes for High Mass.

It shouldn’t be said after Communion but before the priest sits down.

The priest does not have the right to alter that Mass and add prayers in that fashion.

The Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word (MFVA) order at EWTN view one of theirorder’s special charisms as being the duty to reverently conduct Mass on EWTN with 100% adherence to the rubrics. As they are choosing to say the St. Michael the Archangel prayer after Mass, then I have confidence that is the proper way to say it.

In my Parents-In-Law parish, they still say the prayer at the end of daily Masses after the priest processes out after Mass.

We prayed it every day after mass untill two weeks ago, when our new Pastor told us we could not, because that prayer scares the children. UGH! Don’t you ever get tired of it?:banghead:
But now I will pray it for him also, these children see so much violence on television, and video games. Don’t you think it would be nice for them to know this prayer?:banghead:

Yes, I think it should be taught in our religious education programs again… We need all the help and protection we can get, especially for our childen.
