Prayer to St. Michael After Mass

Why was the prayer to St. Michael abandoned after the Mass? I’m rather puzzled by this.

As I understand it Pope Leo XIII wrote the prayer in order to combat Satan. It was recited at the end of Low Mass until the Novus Ordo. Later, Pope John Paul II requested that all parishes recite it once more, why didn’t he just mandate it? Look at all the evils that have occurred since the prayer has ceased to be recited after the Mass.

I’m thinking on asking my priest to bring back the recitation of the prayer to St. Michael after Mass, I don’t think I would be wrong in requesting this but is there anything wrong with the request?

Sorry for all the questions, I looked up most of the information myself. It just seems rather foolish, at least to me, not to recite the prayer to St. Michael. He cast Satan out of Heaven, I’m sure he can cast Satan out of the Church.

That was part of the old latin mass days. Back then, the parish announcements were given before the homily, freeing up the end of mass for the St. Michael prayer.

Just part of the rearrangement of the mass.
 
I dont see why it cant be there now.
Im friends with a parish priest who says it after every mass.
I have no clue why praying for the conversion of sinners would be dropped after mass.
Id say now days, with as many people that leave mass immediately after receiving the Eucharist, It may be hard to get many to stay 30 seconds for it.
 
I never heard this prayer until I started going to daily Mass and I have to agree it is a nice way to close. I still don’t have it completely memorized or I’d say it (at least to myself) after Sunday Mass.
 
Where I attend on Sundays we say the prayer to St. Michael, Most Sacred Heart of Jesus have mercy on us (3x), and because the parish name is St. Bernard’s, we finish with asking him to pray for us. We are fortunate to be a small parish and no-one leaves early.

After daily Mass at the local shrine run by the OMI’s, we say The Memorare, another prayer to Mary (don’t know the name of it), the Hail Mary (3x), Oh Mary conceived without sin…, and Our Lady of Grace pray for us. Again, no one leaves early from daily Mass either

I think I will start saying this after Mass and before praying the Rosary (I never seem to be able to get to church early :rolleyes: .

Sometimes I feel really self-conscious staying so long after church to finish my prayers. And some churches that have daily masses do not stay open later than half an hour after service. Barely time to finish my Rosary. One time, the custodian stood at the door (shuffling and sighing) until I was finished. And I apologized.
 
Great idea. I may also see if our pastor includes this prayer at the end of mass.

After the Priest dismisses the congregation, but BEFORE he leaves the Sanctuary, we recite the prayers. I don’t think anyone here would even think of leaving before the recessional takes place. Then again, our parish is so small that Father still greets everyone at the back of the church after Mass. In large parishes, I guess it may not be feasible.
 
I go to our Cathedral during the week at noon, we always say the prayer to St. Michael after Mass.
 
Oh wow, I hadn’t expected so many people who want to include the prayer to St. Michael after Mass. Nor had I expected anyone to say they already do pray it, that’s awesome!

I’ll be sure to mention the prayer to my priest, I’m sure he won’t mind staying back an extra little while for a prayer. I’m also sure that all parishes could include the prayer to St. Michael, just after announcements and before the final blessing.

It’s still in my Daily Roman Missal (Our Sunday Visitor, 1993) under “Prayers after Mass,” among many other prayers.
 
I learned to say it at the end of the Rosary, after the “Hail, Holy Queen.”

That’s often the time I recite the prayer as well. I’d like to see a comeback of the prayer to St. Michael after Mass though, that would be miraculous!

Don’t be so sure. There is a reason after all that so many priests started dropping the Leonine prayers. I hope you have favorable results, though. Please let us know.

It would indeed be miraulous. Here are the complete Leonine prayers:

These are said at the end of every Low Mass. In our parish, our priest also says the Prayer for Vocations after these. This extra group of prayers adds approximately three minutes at most. It’s a shame that so few parishes still pray them.

(PS - I just googled “Leonine Prayers” and grabbed the first link that popped up, so don’t hold me accountable for whatever other sede nonsense may be on that site.)
 
There is a group at my parish that stays after daily Mass to pray the Rosary. I spoke with them so as not to ruffle any feathers, and now, as soon as the priest leves the nave, we say the St. Michael Prayer. Then some of us leave and the others pray the Rosary.
It works well.
 
We say the St. Michael prayer after every daily Mass. We also say it after Low Mass (along with the other prayers) at the Tridentine Mass I go to on Sundays (we alternate high and low each week).
 
Thanks for the Leonine prayers, most of them I already know. I think there’s only one that I don’t. I think I suggest all of them to my priest, hopefully we can recite them all at the end of Mass.

Funny, my parish makes no announcements. It’s all in the bulletin.
 
I always say it privately before I leave the church. I know it’;s not the same as public prayer, but I do what I can.
