After reading about what the Chaldeans are going through in the Middle East and knowing what the Lebanese Catholics went through that drove them out of their own country, I think we need this prayer more than ever.

For those who have never heard it…

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Does anyone know why we no longer say this after Holy Mass? Is it just that we have replaced it with applause for the choir?

Yes…we need this prayer now more than ever…sadly, the Prayer to St. Michael is just one of many things that are no longer said after Mass.

It is still said in some parishs, St. Isadores in PA says the St. Michael after every daily Mass(there was a thread where a few posters wrote in and said they say it after Mass). I agree the world needs this prayer! And the Rosary, and more Adoration!!! Especially after reading the thread on the infants in the Ukraine:(

As a private devotion, and not part of the Mass Liturgy, this prayer may be said after the Mas by the faithful; such is the case when you watch Mass on EWTN. After the priest exit the nave, all recite the prayer.

At daily Mass, we say this prayer after the morning Rosary, before the start of the Mass.

The Liturgy of the Mass is always the priority over all other devotions/prayers.

Used to be required to be said after Sunday Mass, and Low Mass according to my Missale Romanum 1962. However in this edition they became optional.

Still, every TLM I go to has these prayers said after Mass by the Priest before he retires to the Sacristy.

The faithful are heading for the parking lot before the priest can make it to the door.

It is up to the faithful to say or not. Ask your priest if it is OK for you to see if you can start this after the Mass.
Actually, we do. :):)🙂
But it isn’t the norm and we need all the help we can get!

All you can do is try. Ask the Music Director to announce that we will all now kneel or stand and recite the prayer. We live in a day when everyone is in a hurry to depart from the Mass. We have many who leave as soon as they receive communion. This is something that takes time and pray for the best. Merry CHRISTmas.

I do agree with you.
At my old Catholic Community about half the church ran out after they recieved.
Maybe it has something to do with the elimination of the Prayer to St. Michael.

…or that their confessionals were now broom closets!

I’m just wondering what the reason was for eliminating the prayer. Honestly, I had never heard it until coming to my Wonderful Parish.

Anyway, Merry Christ mas to you too!

Here’s another very good prayer to St. Michael especially in these troublesome times. It was on a prayer card from the Franciscan Mission Associates.

Please protect us St. Michael the Archangel against violence, murder and robbery.
In your goodness preserve us today from all malice of sinful and wicked men.
In your sleepless vigilance watch over the safety and welfare of our homes and keep guard over our possessions.
Ever hold in your special care, most triumphant St. Michael, the forces of public order against the crimes of evil men and defend all honest citizens in time of peril.
We ask this of you through Christ our Lord. Amen!

Merry Christmas!

Well, I can only guess here but since about half of the Clergy and 2/3 to 3/4 of the faithful don’t believe in the existence of Satan anymore why say a prayer to an angel, who they probably don’t believe in either, to protect us from him? Actually, very few people would even accept the idea of spiritual warfare, let alone conceive that in todays enlightened times that it could actually happen.

Sad to say, but belief in evil as a force has pretty much gone the way of many other Catholic beliefs of yesterday. When was the last time you heard a sermon preached about Hell or the possibility of you going there?

Many conservatives believe one of the reasons the world is pretty much spinning more and more out of control is the fact that we as Catholics are no longer praying as we used to. Fewer prayers equals less spiritual assistance and the evil one advances basically unchecked. We’re too wrapped up in ourselves and our feel good don’t offend anyone mentality to see that, and it is frightening,. Very very frightening.

A short history of the Prayer to St. Michael:
For the greater part of this century, the faithful recited the prayer to St. Michael at the end of the Mass. Pope Leo XIII (d. 1903) had a prophetic vision of the coming century of sorrow and war. After celebrating Mass, the Holy Father was conferring with his cardinals. Suddenly, he fell to the floor. The cardinals immediately called for a doctor. No pulse was detected, and the Holy Father was feared dead. Just as suddenly, Pope Leo awoke and said, “What a horrible picture I was permitted to see!” In this vision, God gave Satan the choice of one century in which to do his worst work against the Church. The devil chose the twentieth century. So moved was the Holy Father from this vision that he composed the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel: “St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle! Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who roam about the world seeking the ruin of souls.” Pope Leo ordered this prayer said at the conclusion of Mass in 1886. (When Pope Paul VI issued the Novus Ordo of the Mass in 1968, the prayer to St. Michael and the reading of the “last gospel” at the end of the Mass were suppressed.)

And I agree, we need the prayer now as much as ever. It is a prayer I pray every day.

Yes. Applause for the choir and recognition of human achievements supercedes the holiness of all prayer, don’t ya know?
