Part of my penance was for me to pray to the Holy Family. How does one pray to the Holy Family?

Here is a nice prayer I found on the Catholic Culture website for you.

Prayer to the Holy Family
This prayer is taken from Prayer Book for Religious, compiled by Fr. F. X. Lasance, S.J. (Benziger Brothers, 1904)

O most loving Jesus, Who by Thy sublime and beautiful virtues of humility, obedience, poverty, modesty, charity, patience and gentleness, and by the example of Thy domestic life, didst bless with peace and happiness the family Thou didst choose on earth, in Thy clemency look down upon this household, humbly prostrate before Thee and imploring Thy mercy. Remember that this family belongs to Thee; for to Thee we have in a special way dedicated and devoted ourselves. Look upon us in Thy loving kindness; preserve us from danger; give us help in time of need, and grant us the grace to persevere to the end in the imitation of Thy Holy Family; that having revered Thee and loved Thee faithfully on earth, we may bless and praise Thee eternally in heaven.

O Mary, most sweet Mother, to thy intercession we have recourse, knowing that thy Divine Son will hear thy prayers.

And do thou, O glorious Patriarch, St. Joseph, assist us by thy powerful mediation, and offer, by the hands of Mary, our prayers to Jesus. Amen.

I have a problem saying this kind of prayer…

My family is unholy laced with abortions, fornication, and adultery. My dad is a lapsed catholic. My mom is a lapsed Lutheran. Both are divorced and both live with their girlfriend/boyfriend.

To say such a prayer to the Holy Family would seem dishonest.

Is there a prayer that I can say to the Holy Family that could help my family try to live holy? The one you offered implies that my family is a catholic family that is TRYING to live a holy life.

Why don’t you say one of your own? First to OL Jesus, and then ask the BVM and St. Joseph to intercede to make your family like the Holy Family.

**Slayer, The Holy Family is Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.

In addition to the excellent one offered by Tantum ergo, here is another one from Fr Lasance’s “With God”, Benziger Brothers, 1911.

A Prayer to the Holy Family for the Fulfilment of our Christian Duties

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, bless us and grant us the grace to love our holy Church, as we ought, above all earthly things, and to show our love for it always, and with the evidence of deeds.
*Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father *

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, bless us and grant us the grace to profess, as we ought, openly, with courage, and without human respect, the Faith we received as a gift with holy baptism.
*Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father *

Jesus, Mary, And Joseph, bless us and grant us the grace to share in the defense and propagation of the Faith, as we ought, when duty calls, whether by word or by the sacrifice of our fortunes and our lives.
*Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father *

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, bless us and grant us the grace to love one another, as we ought, and bring us into perfect harmony of thought, will, and action, under the rule and guidance of our pastors.
*Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father *

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, bless us and grant us the grace to conform our lives, as we ought, to the precepts of God and of the Church, so that we may always live in that charity of which they are the expression. Amen.

Saying “Jesus, Mary, and Joseph” is a short prayer itself, and is described as an ejaculation, or, an ejaculatory prayer. Many of these are in the Fr F.X. Lasance books, as well as other old prayer books. From his “With God”…

Ejaculation To Jesus, Mary, And Joseph

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I give you my heart and my soul; Jesus Mary, and Joseph, assist me in my last agony; Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, may I breathe forth my soul in peace with you.
~* Indulgence of 300 days, each time. – Pius VII, Aug. 26, 1814***

Thats sounds better. But what is the “OL” Jesus?

If you are doing this for penance, remember to pray to the Holy family with * yourself *in mind. Pray that they give you courage to resist temptation to sin and so forth. Penance is to address your sins, not others.

As far as your family, you can also pray to the Holy Family in any manner it applies to your situation.

Are all those individual prayers to the holy family?

Thank you!

The short one at the bottom, the Ejaculation is a prayer to the HF, yes. The longer one at the top is one prayer, that also contains the Our Father, Hail Mary, and " Glory Be To the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen ".

Penance must be embraced, and not seen as a burden. It is a wonderful gift. Whichever prayer you choose, say it with a contrite heart in order to show God you are worthy of Absolution of your sins. 🙂

Your welcome 🙂

One more thing I’ll add, Father Michael Mary of the Transalpine Redemptorists suggests " Say an Act of Contrition several times a day ". Good advice, and helps us resist temptation.

You should pray to the Holy Family because it is the perfect example of an earthly family. Pray that they will help you own family.
