Is there a way to discern between unanswered prayer and a prayer request being answered in the negative? I have a few intentions that I have been mentioning for about a year and a half now, and I am not sure how to know whether to keep praying for them or to pray for a change in my own will. Thank you!

Continue praying for them. Also pray that God change your will to be in accordance with His. You should always pray for the latter, you should never be afraid to pray for the former.

Keep praying for them, but also for you to accept God’s will for yourself.

Not knowing what you are praying for, perhaps you could add to your prayer " … … … if it be your Will, for the good of my/their soul. Amen"

I’ve been praying for certain lapsed family members for about a decade now and none of them have returned to the Faith. But St. Monica prayed for many, many years and we know how her prayers were heard and answered.

Sometimes we don’t see the answer to our prayers in this life, and sometimes they aren’t answered right away - maybe to encourage us in perseverence and trust?
