Hi, I recently returned to the Church and an extremely long time away and I am trying to catch up with everything. My question is what do you pray for or what prayers do you say when you first kneel down when you are waiting for the mass to take place?

Thanks

You can pray anything you like. Simply a Good Morning Jesus I love you. I want to thank you for giving me the grace to be here today. Please help me follow in your footsteps this day. Please help me to be a good apostle, brother, friend etc…

Jesus is so happy when you walk in especially those who are just returning. Picture the Good Shepherd and thank him over and over.

You could also say the Morning Offering, Rosary but I find that when I come into Church that I just want to thank Jesus for those graces.

Basically if you are there early there are no set prayers.🙂

Here are 2 before mass prayers:

Receive, O Holy Trinity, One God, this Holy Sacrifice of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, which I, Your unworthy servant, desire now to offer to Your Divine Majesty by the hands of this Your minister, with all the Sacrifices which have ever been or will be offered to You, in union with that most Holy Sacrifice offered by the same Christ our Lord at the Last Supper, and on the Altar of the Cross.

I offer it to You with the utmost affection of devotion, out of pure love for Your infinite goodness, and according to the most holy intention of the same Christ our Lord, and of our Holy Mother the Church.

O God, almighty and merciful, grant us through this Holy Sacrifice, joy and peace, a holier life, time to do penance, grace and consolation of the Holy Spirit, and perseverance in good works. Amen.

Prayer of St. Ambrose (Before Mass)

Lord Jesus Christ,
I approach your banquet table in fear and trembling,
for I am a sinner,
and dare not rely on my own worth,
but only on your goodness and mercy.
I am defiled by many sins in body and soul,
and by my unguarded thoughts and words.
Gracious God of majesty and awe,
I seek your protection,
I look for your healing.
Poor troubled sinner that I am,
I appeal to you, the fountain of all mercy.
I cannot bear your judgment,
but I trust in your salvation.
Lord, I show my wounds to you and uncover my shame before you.
I know my sins are many and great,
and they fill me with fear,
but I hope in your mercies,
for they cannot be numbered.
Lord Jesus Christ, eternal king, God and man,
crucified for mankind,
look upon me with mercy and hear my prayer,
for I trust in you.
Have mercy on me,
full of sorrow and sin,
for the depth of your compassion never ends.
Praise to you, saving sacrfice,
offered on the wood of the cross for me and for all mankind.
Praise to the noble and precious blood,
flowing from the wounds of the my crucified Lord Jesus Christ and washing away the sins of the whole world.
Remember, Lord your creature,
whom you have redeemed with your blood;
I repent my sins,
and I long to put right what I have done. Merciful Father, take away all my offenses and sins;
purify me in body and soul,
and make me worthy to taste the holy of holies.
May your body and blood,
which I intend to receive, although I am unworthy,
be for me the remission of my sins,
the washing away of my guilt,
the end of my evil thoughts,
and the rebirth of my better instincts.
May it incite me to do the works pleasing to you and profitable to my health in body and soul,
and be a firm defense against the wiles of my enemies. Amen.

Welcome back!

If you’ve been away for a long while, you’ve probably noticed some things have changed … First of all, don’t let the lack of “silence” before Mass bother you. Try to focus your prayer and pray anyway. A number of pastors are not bothering to remind the congregation that the Real Presence requires respect, reverence and silence 15 minutes before Mass.

Please do not let this discourage you. It really bothered me when I first returned, but I’ve since gotten past it – and just say my Rosary or choose a pew as close to the Tabernacle as possible and close your eyes.

God Bless you and take you by the hand, as you return home!

It’s a good time to pray an Our Father, a Hail Mary and a Glory Be for the Holy Father’s intentions with the intent of gaining all possible indulgences that day.

Praying the same for your diocese and parish is also probably good.

And if time permits a third time for all those asking for prayer on this forum.

Thanks for sharing the prayers FrCorey! I’ve never heard those before.

My prayers prior to the start of Mass vary based on when I get to church and what my responsibilities may be at that Mass.

There are three different ways that I may pray prior to the start of Mass:

1.) The Divine Office. Before Sunday Morning Mass I’ll pray Morning Prayer (If I attend an evening Mass, I’ll often stay after and pray Evening Prayer)

2.) The Rosary

3.) Private, spontaneous “talk to God time.” I think that sometimes we get too caught up in devotional prayer that we forget to just talk to God, and ask for the things we need. More importantly, we don’t stop talking all during prayer because we forget to make time to LISTEN to God.

There are also some excellent “pre-Mass” prayers found in the edition of the Divine Office that I use. I may add one of them to the end of my “pre-Mass” prayer.

I like to say the “Prayer in Front of A Cruxifix,” “Our Father,” “Hail Mary,” “Glory Be” and “Come Holy Spirit,” then end it with my personal intentions and offerings. 🙂

I usually say hi and talk to God about what’s been going on since the last time I was at Mass; what’s on my mind that day. Nothing particularly formal.

Honestly, I thank God for my wonderful Parish, my wonderful Hubby, great children and the blessing to be able to worship as I please without the government or non-Christians working to kill me.

I try to forgo getting bogged down in petitions, but rather try to recollect myself in interior silence and solitude in the presence of God. Often I’ll also meditatively pray some of the Rosary or the Divine Office. :gopray:
Welcome Home! 👍
