What’s the catholic teaching on when you pray to God while having a mortal sin on your soul?

I’ve heard he listens if you are willing to change your wicked ways and I also have heard that you might as well be praying to a rock.

I’ve heard that too. Not true. 'While you will most likely not be getting too many graces, the one you will get is the grace and strength to go to confession. “God never leaves anyone”, this was told to me by a priest during a bad time in my life. And he was right.

That’s nonsense.
God always listens to our prayers no matter our state and he always answers these prayers.
Without prayer it will be harder to repent of mortal sins.

It is up to God, ultimately, whether He listens or not.
That being said, however, it is also true
that even if you are a mortal-sinner,
if you really WANT to change, even if you haven’t succeeded in repenting yet,
if you really WANT to,
that is evidence that God IS working on your heart and soul.
And if He is working on your heart and soul,
he will listen to your sincere prayers.

People in the Bible have been in mortal sin and prayed to God for forgiveness and He hears and forgave. The main thing is though, I think, you cannot pray for other requests until your Relationship is healed by Confession or Perfect Contrition.

God still listens, so you should keep praying. If you have had a habit of prayer, you should keep doing it, even if you fall into Mortal Sin. There is a story from a book (cannot recall the book), of a young man who had the practice of reciting 3 Aves every evening before he retired for the night. He had fallen into a life of immorality and frequented prostitutes with a friend. Story goes that his friend was attacked while going home one evening, and died. The friend appeared to him to him from Hell to warn him that the same fate awaited him, but he had been spared due to his Aves to the Blessed Mother. He should take this warning seriously and abandon his sinful life, which he did do. He confessed his sins and renounced his past, and entered a religious order. Those prayers literally saved him from a terrible fate, and he was given a rare chance to reform and amend his life.

Also, while you cannot earn merit and gain graces while in a state of mortal sin; once you have confessed and submitted them to the keys of the confessional, at the moment you are absolved, you gain the graces and merits you would have earned. It is as though you never lost them. So, in addition to the restoration of Sanctifying Grace; all those other merits and graces you would have earned due to prayers and good works and holy deeds, are now restored to you. I can’t think of a better reason than that, to be persistent with prayer. To think that when we repent of mortal sin, we may gain the graces and merits we had lost due to sin. Prayers done when in a state of mortal sin are never wasted ones, as your Heavenly Father awaits your return to him, like the Prodigal Son.

One thing which is kind of related is the use of Sacramentals (ie. rosaries, blessed Bibles, etc.). I’ve heard the issue raised is what is the effect/ benefit of these items. It seems the arrived at answer is they don’t give us Grace. Under normal circumstances, Grace is given to us through the Sacraments (in this case Confession). However, Sacramentals, help align us be more and more receptive to God’s Grace when He does give it to us. There is even an indulgence attached to reading your Bible for 15 minutes a day.

So pray using these items will help you overcome the sins you have committed. Just remember, it always starts and ends with the Sacraments. Keep that in mind and you’re on the right track.
