Is it proper to kneel when you pray or do you not have to?

If you mean personal, private prayer, one may kneel or not as one wants. In public, liturgical prayer there are times when those participating should certainly kneel if they are able, such as the Consecration at Mass in the Latin Rite.

What your body does affects your soul. I often pray on my knees, we almost all bow our heads when we pray, we put our hands in specific positions, we make the sign of the Cross.

These things seperate what we’re doing from everyday things and put us in the proper state of mind. Our brain gets these physical clues of “This is Holy time now,” and helps us concentrate.

That being said however, there are no rules about it, and just as often as I pray kneeling, I pray sitting in chairs, crosslegged on the floor, standing, or laying down. It just depends on where I’m at and why I’m praying.

If you’re at work, standing, there’s no need to fall to your knees to say your Hail Mary, and the world will definitally still benefit from the prayer. When at home, maybe you do fall on your knees, just to help yourself and as a sign of your submissivness.
