Praying here…this is a situation that frequently needs prayer.

I administered and underwrote medical and life insurance, as well as long and short term disability for a very big bank for about 5 years…until it was gobbled up by an even bigger bank. The one piece of advice I can give you is to be persistant. This is one case where the squeaky wheel just might get the oil if it just keeps squeaking. If you’re dealing with your employer’s HR department, you’re probably talking to peons who can’t do anything except follow the rules. If you can get to the head of HR, you may get the results you need. They will frequently override decisions, especially if the company is self-insured, which many are. Good luck, and keep on plugging.

thanks…i’m currently waiting for the HR supervisor to return from vacation to see if he will approve a change despite our missing the open enrollment.

I am a unionized worker for a very large retail company in the United States. Most often, it takes a year to be eligible for benefits. I missed the enrollment date for my insurance coverage because I misread a posting on the calendar and was new to the whole ‘open enrollment’ thing. Our insurance is administered through a company and we have the option of choosing either Cigna or Kaiser. I was 10 days past the deadline but was able to enroll because my employer had the wrong address on my records (this also screwed up me receiving my W-2s for the previous year). I simply called the people administering the insurance program (Zenith) and told them the situation and was able to enroll past the enrollment date. Most companies require their workers to enroll 2x per annually, to keep insurance. Make sure your contact information is up to date with the HR department so that you can get timely communications between yourself and your employer regarding benefits. Thankfully I am now enrolled, but I wouldn’t have been able to enroll if it wasn’t for the very understanding person that I talked to who worked for the administering company.
