Hello, all, and thank you so very much for your time! In my struggle to deal with this issue, I have spent time searching for wisdom on Catholic Answers, but I am now so desperate that I decided to write a post of my own…

Tomorrow, my boyfriend and I will celebrate our six-month anniversary, but we are mired in confusion and distress over the current state of our relationship. We have known each other for over a year and became best friends in about December, which blossomed into a dating relationship in February. Our platonic love became more, and we experienced about three great months together before things changed, or rather, I changed… He improved his attitudes and behaviours toward sex, whereas I began to overreact over small things…

Before we dated, my boyfriend knew that I am a cradle Catholic who will remain a virgin until my wedding night, and I knew that he had somewhat of a sexual past (with debatable virginity) and had a mixed religious upbringing. From the start, he agreed to “wait until marriage” and to raise any eventual children Catholic, but debates were still in store. He learned that I am committed to lifelong chastity, the “rules” of which he does not understand and with which he does not agree. I, in turn, became aware that he was raised in a Jewish-Catholic household (baptised Catholic but received no religious instruction in either faith) and has no defined faith. He prays to the Judeo-Christian God every night and tries to do what he perceives to be His will but has no other religious practices or observances. I had always intended to only date Catholics, but since he was my very beloved friend, I agreed to a relationship…

Without being extraordinarily descriptive, let me say that my boyfriend is wonderful in many, many ways. Though we have very different interests, he is constantly willing to try new things for my sake. My naïveté and "ditziness” are balanced very well by his practicality, organisation, and reliability. No one is a more patient or careful listener or gives better advice, and he is very attentive. He is gentle and sweet and gives me constant assurances that I am beautiful (even when I am undeniably a sweaty, hideous, frumpy mess) – and means it. He is romantic and thoughtful, sending me photos of flowers and adorable baby animals, taking me outside to stare at the moon, and sending me the sweetest gifts and love notes. The most trivial things that I say, he remembers with perfect clarity. No birthday, anniversary, or other important date is forgotten. He holds open car doors, pays for every meal, and even gallantly carries me up the staircase when my back problem is exacerbated (not that I request this – he just always goes above and beyond for me!). At any hour of the night, he will go out of his way to help me, whether it is driving me a forgotten piece of my uniform in the middle of the night or driving over an hour away to surprise me during a bad work shift. Throughout my slew of current medical problems, he has been my rock, driving me to appointments and holding my hand through every situation. I am unwaveringly supported and encouraged to pursue my dreams, even when this comes at a cost to him. He never criticises me and patiently endures my southern Italian temper, hubris, and generally dramatic nature. No one reads me better. After one sentence or text, he knows both that I am upset and the precise topic of my distress. His family embraced me instantly and mine loves him. He is absolutely adorable when he plays with my goddaughter. I do not doubt that he loves me with absolute sincerity… He is extremely self-sacrificing and drops absolutely everything for his parents and me… and the fire department.

Now, who I am to complain that my boyfriend is a brave, dedicated, self-sacrificing hero? (Not to mention strong, tall, dark, and handsome, haha!) Unfortunately, however, heroism aside, firehouses often have frat house atmospheres with a heavy emphasis on pornography, masturbation, fornication, insert unchaste act here. There is a pervasive fire service lie that “manhood” cannot be obtained without fornication, and as my chastity is very public (firehouses have no secrets!), so is my boyfriend’s perceived wimpiness. My boyfriend, raised without a strong religious or moral foundation, grew up in firehouses, indoctrinated from young childhood with their warped views of sexuality and women. He does respect me as a person and has a “normal” view of women, as compared to the sexist, misogynistic attitudes that are quite prevalent, but still falls prey to the myth that casual sex equals manhood. Despite some fallings (which do haunt me occasionally but he now regrets, which is a great comfort), he did refuse intercourse, instinctively feeling that he ought to wait for the right time and the right person. For my sake, when he finally realised how much his porn usage devastated me, he swore off it forever. Quite an improvement from the statement he made at the beginning of the relationship to never give up two things: firefighting and porn!!! Even before that point, he reported that he was using it less and less and was losing interest, largely because it was rather tainted by my disapproval and sadness. He has tried to decrease how much he masturbates and says that it also is no longer fulfilling. (Prayers at work?) The comments about his sexual frustration continue, however, and he also feels a need to make sexual jokes with and hide his lack of current pornographic indulgence from the other firefighters so that his “manhood” level does not fall further. Due to years of verbal abuse and bullying, he already has no self-esteem. With the taunting over virginity paired with the disappointment of his girlfriend, he is quite torn and quite depressed. His home, school, social, and career lives are at all-time lows, and the ongoing sexual debate has caused even more of a downward spiral.

My boyfriend never pressures me to have sex, but because we are very open and honest with each other, he confides his sexual frustrations to me, and I always overreact. In May, he made a thoughtless comment about our possible future son joining the fire service and becoming exposed to porn. I panicked. Better to die childless than to bear children destined for corruption, I reasoned. I realised that, unless my boyfriend makes some huge changes, I could never feel comfortable marrying him… and I found such a transformation unlikely. Since then, the most innocent, “After marriage, why can’t we do…?” results in tears and a fight, caused solely by me. He asks patiently, calmly, and curiously, fully prepared for what he views as an inevitable compromise on his part. Though he perceives “Catholic sex” to be restrictive and too “black and white,” and he is frustrated because I seem uncompromising, he is still absolutely committed to staying with me and to following my moral standards (though not regarding masturbation before marital sex supposedly replaces it.) He is willing to learn and change and sacrifice greatly for love of me. I know that my overreacting is unreasonable and pains him greatly. He knows that I think him corrupted (though not unsalvageable or a bad person), and this makes him very sad. All he does is offer me love and patience, and I return it with preaching and anger.

I love this man. He is indescribably precious to me. He thinks that, because of my distress over these things, I hate him. Nothing could be farther from the truth. He despises himself, but when I fight and cry, it is over his lost innocence and for the possible (likely?) loss of our future together. I am so tired of feeling (though I should not) guilt over his sexual frustration and of endless debates. I feel like problems will only get worse and I have basically given up. I am not interested in another man, but I do yearn sometimes for a good Catholic boyfriend who can work with me in a team effort to stay virginal and for a good Catholic husband to read our children Bible stories on his knee. Saint Augustine converted – my boyfriend certainly can – but I am no Saint Monica or Saint Rita. I am not sure if I have the strength to continue with this. Am I about to reject a great relationship with a beautiful man, or am I desperately clinging to something destined to fail? And I wonder… Is he more likely to convert if I stay with him and try to help him to Christ? Or would a break up, a choice between masturbation et al. and me motivate him to change? I love him so much and see so much potential in him. In us. But I also feel so much pain… HELP, please!

I should add that, due to my arrogance over my purity, I thought myself strong enough to withstand anything… False. I fell to impurity on one occasion. Minor compared to fornication, I guess, but it was enough to horrify me and still fill me with shame. In the scheme of things, however, I have learned from this… I realised how awful that was and I will never, never, NEVER stoop that low or put myself in such a compromising position EVER again. I’m telling ya, I’m a Pharisee, full of the sin of hubris, and this really taught me a lesson! My self-control may be much better than my boyfriend’s, but I am still quite susceptible. Anyway, point being, other than that instance, we have done nothing else and I actually, in a desire to set a good example and to be able to provide better answers to his questions about the faith, am trying to grow closer to God and am studying my faith much more. My boyfriend does not drag me down, sin does not depress me; my own histrionics seem to cause the problems…

I will keep you in my prayers… there does seem to be much good in your boyfriend; at the same time, it seems he has a lot of maturing to do (possibly, much healing needed) before he would be a suitable husband for you.

For many women there is a temptation to find a man who is needy and broken, then marry him and think that she will “fix” him when they are married. My mother made that mistake - it never works out that way. Please don’t fall into that trap!

Maybe his love for you will give him the motivation he need to grow and mature - it is hard to say. But I fear that if he isn’t capable of doing it for himself (and for God) he can’t really do it for you either. I don’t know if I am expressing myself well.

I think you need to confide in someone whose judgment you trust, and who also knows this young man, and can give you guidance based on that personal knowledge.

God bless you and know that your friends on the forums are praying for you!

He’s supportive, never pressures you, and respects your rules, but there’s something missing? What is it?

I can tell you this much you cannot cry, scream, and freak out when he asks an innocent question. You need to figure out why you react that way, with the help of a counselor if necessary, and work to stop doing that.

I don’t think you’re being fair to your boyfriend because you say you love him, yet on the other hand, you’re keeping your eye out for someone who is “Catholic”? While I empathize with your boyfriend’s sexual frustration, I’ve heard that Christian singles groups only allow dating in pairs (two couples) and affirms a “no sex” before marriage rule. The more time you and your boyfriend spend together however, while simultaneously trying to deny your sexual feelings for each other, is like playing with fire.

In all fairrness to your boyfriend, you have to decide whether he is really the one you want to marry or not. If you choose him, then you must set a date in the near future, otherwise you must let him go. It doesn’t matter how wonderful a boyfriend he is for you if you’re not able to commit to him 100 %, because that would just be stringing him along for the ride.

Perhaps you could even mutually decide to put the relationship on hold and see if that doesn’t make things more clear. Whatever you decide, you cannot continue the relationship the way it is, your boyfriend frustrated on the one hand and you wanting the best of both worlds. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance and choose, but choose wisely.

Please understand that I can respect someone wanting have a life of chastity, but it seems that you also want a Catholic marriage. Those are two things are in some conflict since the Catholic Church asks a Catholic marriage to be open to procreation, something you can’t really have without sex. Indeed a marriage can be annulled in the Catholic Church on such grounds. You may consider praying if marriage, religious life, or living single is your life’s call. If marriage is your call, you will have to come to some terms with sex especially in a Catholic setting. I hope you can see the good in sex too; the chance to love your spouse intimately and the chance to continue God’s creation.

Also please forgive me if this is not true, but the way you talk about yourself in a self deprecating manner and your intense interest in sexual purity has me concerned that someone may have abused you in the past. If so I beg you to find someone to talk about it if you aren’t already. Again I’m sorry if I assumed something wrong, but I’d rather take the chance and be a light in your life if needed.

A quick note. Chastity doesn’t mean “no sex.” It means to be sexually activated as guided by the Catholic faith. Namely, this mean; No porn, no masturbation, no sex outside of marriage and no contraceptives; and that sexual intercourse be geared towards procreation. A chaste lifestyle is one with healthy sexuality, not one without sex, that’s a celibate lifestyle, which is what a priest engages in.

I would encourage you to continue seeking God’s will in regards to relationship. Try to not worry so much about what you think you want, but look at it from God’s point of view. Is this a man that God would want you to marry?

For your relationship to continue to blossom you need to continue to be open with your boyfriend and to allow him to be open with you. Not every couple is at the same level spiritually, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t right for eachother. Keep sharing with him your concerns for your future together and for your future children and let him share his.

As time passes you should be better able to discern God’s will in the matter. Its easy to be blinded by the good or bad things as we see them in a relationship, but the important thing is that we seek through prayer to find God’s will and then we resolve to follow it.

One final note, personally, I have some concern over your boyfriends porn/masterbation use. I am actually a recovering porn addict myself and I know it is a difficult journey for most men to give it up. If he is only giving it up for you, I don’t know if that resolve will stick. If he see’s nothing wrong with it himself, this is an issue that could continue rearing its ugly head.

Hope that helps… out of all this I think the best advice that I had is to seek to know and follow God’s will. Try to imagine who God would want for you. Then decided if this is him. If not, accept that God has someone else in mind and move on.

I have to agree here. Your boyfriend may have good intentions and even think he is doing the right thing… but his first concern needs to be putting things right between himself and God. When he has come to that place (not that any of us ever put things completely right, but I mean in terms of major sin), then he might be a suitable spouse for you.

It does seem that the opinion of his peers may be holding your boyfriend back …while he might already be feeling it in his heart that certain things are wrong. One is a strong man by defying the peer pressure not by caving in to it! In fact, I’ve known instances of people who don’t abstain respecting the resolve of those who do abstain. Heck, it sometimes leads to attraction (secular girl meets a strong Catholig guy etc.). Also, if you need to compromise your conscience just to stay welcome in a certain group, then perhaps staying in that group is not worth it? Just give up the mental block, and think, “what if I actually do leave them?” There are also some things one thinks he couldn’t live without but with time it shows they aren’t really essential (your boyfriend may have already made this way with fornication).

Good luck whatever you do!

And guys change. I have first-hand experience, as I’ve changed some things too, although I’d prefer not to give out specifics.

Dating is a part of the walk of faith that I believe is often overlooked in the Catholic teachings. From my understanding, you know of, accept, and practince the Catholic faith. Your boyfriend appears to know little of, not accept, and not practice the Catholic faith. It seems you intend to have a God-centered marriage. But, it doesn’t seem as if you are equally yoked to your boyfriend in a spiritual sense.

To become equally yoked, your boyfriend would have to commit to taking the responsibility to learning about, accpet, and practice the Catholic faith to “catch up.” This could take many years. Consider how many years it took you to form your beliefs.

On the same token, it may be worth you both taking a couse such as Theology of the Body and learning to understand the true nature and expectations of love and sex between a husband and a wife, for future marriage preparation. This course may be helpful even if you end up marrying different people. Also, you need to be open-minded to the fact that you and your husband need to listen to each other in the bedroom as sexual “relations” is an expression between a husband and wife that has a two-sided aspect.

All in all, because it does not seem as if you are close to being equally yoked with your boyfriend, it doesn’t seem as if you should be exclusively dating since at this point the two of you do not seem suited for marriage. It’s probably best to go back to being friends only or just part ways.

In future, consider being more discerning regarding choosing a potential mate. Along with the superficial good qualities, you have to learn to look to the core of a person’s heart and determine if that person will continue to bring you closer to God if you were married. If the answer is no, then you need to be strong and move on rather than get yourself emotionally entanged in the wrong situation.

It wouldn’t hurt to keep in touch and check in with each other from time-to-time. Over the years, you both could find that you’ve changed and matured and maybe that will be a better time to attempt to have a closer relationship. But, right now does not appear to be the right time for either of you to be pursuing a serious relationship–at least not with each other.

Good luck and prayers have been said for your clarity, strength, and resolve.

Your boyfriend is in a macho profession. It’s not easy to be the man who refuses to talk nasty about women, does not put up the porn images, etc. It takes a man who is very secure with himself and knows the reasons he doesn’t want to use porn, masturbate, etc. And it must come from the man himself, not because anyone else is holding him up to it.

If I may ask, how old is your boyfriend? How old are you?

Everyone, thank you so much for the advice and prayers!!!

As you suggested, louisak, he definitely needs to heal. His family life is very stressful, and he unfortunately did not grow up with an example of a strong parental marriage. “Normal” sexuality was learned at firehouses, where (and I’ve sadly yet to personally encounter an exception) pornography/masturbation were the rules and casual sex practiced by nearly everyone. Older firefighters were quite eager to introduce him to porn and “firehouse sluts” with the misguided intentions of helping him “become a man,” “join the club,” “have some fun,” etc. He also became quite infatuated with a girl, a good friend, but his best friend at the time began to date her, and the two taunted and tortured him for years. He has no sense of self-worth and is very insecure about his body image, so her rejection pushed him over the edge, and in an attempt to console himself and to “prove” he was a man, he engaged in some… casual sexual activities. He does not view them as necessarily “wrong,” but he does regret them. Not only did they leave him personally unfulfilled, but they also brought him no true respect from the guys… They taunt him more than ever. As we first began to date, he wanted to lie and say we were fornicating so that they’d leave him alone, but he decided to respect me and be completely honest. He is definitely gaining strength in regards to staying chaste, but there will be many more battles before the war is won… So yes, a lot of healing in regards to many issues, not just sexual and religious. He is quite a funny guy, but deep down, he is profoundly lost and depressed. Could that hole be filled with an active religious life? Absolutely - without one, we are all obviously unfulfilled - but so far, no luck. There have been a few occasions on which he could’ve been coerced or pressured to accompany me to church, and he would’ve reluctantly gone, but I just have a feeling that it is better for his first experience of Mass to be initiated and desired by him…

BlueEyedLady, I definitely understated some things… It is hard to describe, but just as everyone has behavioural fluctuations, his attitude toward “Waiting”-with-a-capital-W definitely varies. No, he doesn’t “pressure” me, meaning that he doesn’t threaten me with violence or ultimatums. It is more subtle. Yes, often he does ask questions because he sincerely wants to learn more about Catholic views on chastity… but his tone can be rather whiny and sometimes angry. He is clearly very frustrated, physically and mentally, and it shows. I, in turn, get frustrated because old debates over that I thought were resolved are again brought to the table and because I resent the implication that I am asexual, prudish, or just kinda MEAN for making him wait. I do feel badly for his struggles, and I know I don’t give him enough credit. Sometimes I get intentionally horny, too. It is awful. I can sympathise with him. But constant talk of sexual “needs” and the unsaid implication that I can’t - worse, WON’T - meet them does get taxing. We still have lots of debates on little technicalities, and he sometimes gets rather angry/frustrated with the Church/me on points with which he completely disagrees. He says he respects my limits and would never pressure me, but then he asks for something I can’t give, e.g. “You just bought new underwear; may I see them? …Why not? It isn’t SEX!”

He understands not having sex before marriage, but everything between that and only closed-mouth kissing can and is debated. FREQUENTLY. The French-kissing argument is one that comes up again and AGAIN. I am still not sure what to think… The usual answer is that it is not permissible, but if both people are honest about whether they get aroused and stop if they do… I would prefer to avoid it, and I personally don’t really enjoy it, but in talking with a priest, he (in what was only his personal, fallible opinion, of course) said that if it respected both partners and wasn’t arousing, we should just use our best judgment. I feel pressure to “give him something” and accept that it is arguably in a grey area, so I sometimes permit it. Then I break down and say no, and my boyfriend agrees to avoid it, but then the old debate rises from the dead and we go through the cycle again. Should I put my foot down if something goes too far? Yes, but it is so exhausting, and I do pity him for going through the struggles of chastity without believing in it, which obviously strengthens one’s resolve, and… need I explain this? It gets hard to always kinda seem like “the bad guy,” particularly when it isn’t like I am immune to my own desires. But it is difficult to whine about that to a boy who’s not out having sex, doing what he wants and what would gain him his friends’ respect, just because of you… He listens and tries to be supportive, but the response tends to ultimately be, “Well, if you want it that badly, you know where to find me…” He did admit on one occasion that waiting seemed to be the right thing to do/pleasing to God, but he mostly just talks about how he wishes we could have sex. It is so hard to explain. I must sound very contradictory or confusing, but so is the situation. I could give loads of examples - trying to speak generally is hard - but I guess it is best to say that, deep down, he recognises the virtues of chastity, but totally re-defining his worldview while dealing with peer pressure and strong physical desires is difficult. He is working on it, but sometimes a lot of frustration comes to the surface, and when it meets my own, we fight.

Furthermore, the porn use stopped… kinda. He admitted to looking at a magazine recently (since they are alllll over the station, of course) for “help” doing… ughh… though he said it did nothing for him and he thought of me, instead… Also UGH. What is worse? Having your man think of other women or imagine YOU?!? Painful one way, awkward and kinda humiliating the other… Not going to lie, I sometimes dream of us… And thoughts of our wedding night do occur… I have my weaknesses!!! …But him doing that to masturbate? Serious ICK factor for me. He says he “doesn’t want to” (read: CAN’T) stop, but will once we marry. Do I really buy into this? I want to, and I don’t think I can actually marry him unless proves he can give it up, but he is making so many positive changes that I do want to give him a chance to continue to improve, and due to our social situations and relatively young ages, marriage is years away, so there is time to continue to discern. He also says he will watch it if the guys are and he’s around. I personally view this as him going back on his word, but where do I draw the line between applauding his progress and criticising his downfalls? It is like a puppy who keeps peeing on the floor. I don’t want to get too soft and not insist upon him going outside, because then the bad behaviour will continue and maybe worsen, but screaming at him or dropping him off at the Humane Society is overreacting. Where is the happy medium? He is just so afraid of the social consequences if the boys knew he weren’t watching porn. TheRealJuliane, you said it perfectly. The firehouse environment really insists upon this, and it is not at all unique to our firehouse or group of friends, and he is not going to forfeit his career (If your eye causes you to sin… I know, I know, but he won’t), so unfortunately, chevalier, he is stuck with this social situation. I do pray that he will become more immune to their taunts, and he has become stronger! 🙂 But it is hard for both of us… I feel guilty putting him through something so painful, physically and emotionally, though I know it is obviously right for our relationship and our souls. If he had a stronger religious base… Or some semblance of self-esteem… But hey, baby steps…

Cryptic 1, sorry I was unclear! I wish HE were Catholic, that is all!!! I have no interest in other men. None of them are tempting, because compared to him, he always wins! 🙂 He really is an outstanding person and my hero! 🙂 Once he truly, personally accepts chastity (we are getting there, if slowly) and, hopefully, becomes a practicing Catholic (gotta dream big…), he will truly be unbelievable. 🙂 He is otherwise so amazing… Self-sacrificing, conscientious, dedicated, etc. Firefighters would give up their lives for anyone in a second, but their everyday sacrifices, while not quite as dramatic, are still huge. The time spent away from family and friends (and the resulting relationship tensions), the constant knowledge that every goodbye could be the last, the shift work and physical and emotional tolls… He is a great man, just not yet an example of Christian manhood!

PJH_74, no, no! No abuse! But thank you for caring!!! I was just so sheltered growing up and convinced that I’d meet and marry some sort of extremely Catholic fairybook prince completely immune to pre-marital sexual desires that I never anticipated any of these issues or debates. I was completely unprepared. (Yes, I spent way too much time sitting inside and reading, haha!)

Proverbs31Lady, he tries to understand my position, though he sometimes asks more incredulously than kindly, but he has no plans to convert. I think he is frightened - of the reaction of his non-Catholic parent, and also of all that would mean. Accepting Catholicism means accepting so many new “rules” and also all one’s sins… It IS quite intimidating!!! So glad I am a cradle Catholic, though I do envy the raging passion and conviction of converts!!! 🙂

Andrew1980, thank you for sharing your personal testimony! It is very comforting to know that men CAN overcome this!!! Any advice, if it is not too intimate to ask, on how to best help my boyfriend? I am not sure how to support him. He has virtually eliminated the porn and is even trying to cut down on the masturbation for my sake, but I know he suffers a lot, physically. Ah, the joys of addiction… He is actually to the point at which he usually ends up completely unsatisfied, and he often says, “I don’t even know why I do it anymore!!!” Probably an effect of overstimulation/addiction, or his general depressive state, but when he doesn’t, he goes through “blue balls,” etc. I’ve tried explaining that, physiologically, there is no actual NEED for release, that everything will be reabsorbed, eventually, but he has never actually managed to hold out long enough to see the truth of that. Any advice on distracting activities or ways to reduce the pain? Or how to be comforting? I feel like I always say the wrong thing…

There are guys out there like that.

I am probably saying things wrong and sounding so cruel and haughty… perhaps I am… but I created this thread because I love that boy, I really do. He is my best friend and the most precious gift. There is no one I love more, except the Trinity, obviously! I do not describe infatuation. I know we are both sincere. On this forum, I am listing only our struggles, the worst parts of our relationship and of ourselves. But we are completely dedicated to each other. I probably sound very selfish in all this, but I do try my best to sacrifice for him, I do! Nothing (except his conversion, of course!!!) would make me happier than being his wife… because it is so very fulfilling to shower him with love and care! How glorious it would be not just to fall asleep cuddling and wake up to his beautiful face every morning, but also to ensure that he is always happy and healthy. The smallest chores - doing his laundry, washing his dishes, cooking his food - are such wonderful ways to express love, and they are so personally satisfying!!! It feels so amazing when I have the chance to do something like that, surprise him with groceries or something. He always goes out of his way for me and is indescribably sweet and caring. We are often frustrated, yes, but we have ultimately grown closer, stronger as a couple, and less selfish throughout our debates on chastity. Not only have we stuck together through all that, but we also have helped each other with emotional and physical problems, career and academic woes, bad family situations, deaths of loved ones… We are currently staying strong throughout a very long and very distant long-distance stage! On and on and on goes the list. I just wanted to clear things up… I wrote the original post because I love him SOOOOO much and our relationship is SOOO amazing otherwise that I really yearn for this issue to be resolved! I hate the pain and tension that it causes not just me, but mostly him. I know he suffere so due not only to the judgments of his sex-crazed friends (rather, those who buy into cheap ideas of casual sex and sadly have no conception of how glorious and powerful it can actually be) and also due to his own self-condemnation. Even as he is expressing his frustration to me over why he can’t see those new underwear (ugh, why did I let him see my shopping bags?!?), he is hating himself for asking and for putting me through pain. He is quite an empath! I obviously benefit from that, but it also pains me, too, (also quite a sucker for the distress of others) to know that MY pain causes HIM pain… You get the picture. Words are said, tempers flare, and we are both immediately so racked with guilt that we cry and apologise for hours. At least we know that we are capable of making up after fights, ha. But seriously, our relationship is otherwise great, and I am quite blessed to have such a loving, supportive boyfriend! He has caused so many positive changes in my life and psyche, and he says I’ve helped him, too. I think that we really do have the ability to sustain a happy and Holy marriage… but this hurdle first needs crossed.

Every marriage I’ve heard of (lots) that has the husband with that kind of past ends up sort of like this.

You need to be really careful. Read the threads on the forum about unequally yoked marriages. If your boyfriend has grown up with the things he has, practically entwined into his being, you may be waiting forever and miss out on an opportunity to marry (like, at all).

Yes, there are! One of my best friends constantly awes me with his holiness! Much as I admire him, I am not attracted. I love my boyfriend, and were he to become Catholic, he’d be a king, not a prince! 🙂 All the foundations and supplies for being extremely holy are there - he just seems some mortar and the will to bind them together! The changes in him since he first met are extraordinary, and happily, they continue! I know no cause is ever lost, so I remain optimistic! I do not believe that, because he sins differently than I (“Never judge someone for sinning differently than you,” isn’t that the quote?), he is unsuitable for marriage. It took Saint Augustine, what, years after starting to accept the truth of Catholicism to convert? (“Da mihi castitatem et continentiam, sed noli modo!”) Not saying that you implied I ought to leave my boyfriend in favour of a fairy tale! I am just saying that I won’t. 🙂

Okay, but what about the time frame?

But will his marrying you work?

Are you prepared to wait years? I’m not telling you to leave your boyfriend, but I am telling you to be careful. Give yourself a time limit (that you keep to yourself) for him to improve by.

Again, your boyfriend’s behaviors do not bode well.
