Hello:

I apologize in advance for this lengthy post.

I need some prayers and advice concerning a chronic problem with my siblings in law.

We have been married many years. My husband is the only married sibling out of four. There is one other sibling who is divorced, the other two are single.

The chronic problem is my siblings-in-law tend to ignore me. Although I try at every family gathering to be pleasant (i.e., making the usual efforts at conversation, “What’s new? How’s the job? How about those (insert sports team)?” etc.; helping out with setting up/cleaning up holiday meals etc.; extending sincere compliments for accomplishments, haircuts etc.) they never reciprocate. There have been extended weekends (family reunions etc.), where they did not speak to me unless I spoke first.

The problem also extends to phone calls, social media, and texting. None of us are the type to get on the phone to chat but I have on occasion contacted them to offer help and support (for example, I’m in the recruiting industry and offered my services for free when one of them was threatened with a job loss. Likewise, I recently offered to connect one of them (who was recently diagnosed with a chronic debilitating illness) with friend of mine with the same diagnosis. I have also shared cute FB cartoons that seemed to relate to their careers, interests etc…).

In all cases, crickets… (i.e., no response whatsoever). Yet, later, things will be said in passing that make it clear they have received the message, they just choose to not respond to me.

While I’ve prayed about it and confessed my anger/frustration about it many times, I don’t know what to do about it – if anything:

On the one hand, there’s the whole definition of insanity argument: “It’s insanity to keep doing the same thing yet expect a different result.” If I don’t say anything, nothing will change.

On the other, there is the example of countless saints, who were able to put up with a lot from their family members without saying a word, in imitation of Christ, who was a silent lamb lead to slaughter. Also, because of the difficulty of the situation, I fear that anything I say will only make things worse.

I’ve tried not to include my husband in this struggle as he has enough issues to deal with. Also, we are all adults, I should be able to handle this as an adult, right?

I apologize for the length of this post and thank you all for your prayers and advice.

God bless,

My goodness, you really impressed me as someone I should try to emulate!

I wish I had some words of wisdom for you, but I don’t. You can’t help how your in-laws treat you, that is their own issue. Perhaps someday they will be ashamed of themselves for their behavior, maybe not. You have nothing to be ashamed of in yours. Keep on doing what you are already doing. If you think they are bad to you now, think what it will be like if you give them a dose of their own treatment!

You are doing everything you can. St. Padre Pio said “pray, hope, don’t worry” and those words help me in difficult times.

May the Lord bless you for being such a decent person to them.

I have no advice but only sympathy. I get the same silent treatment from my sister-in-law. The last couple of times we have gone home for a visit, and had a get together with my sister-in-law’s family, she didn’t look at me or speak to me and would leave the room if she and I were left alone together. I have also been married for a long time, and the relationship has grown worse over time.

From what I understand, based on little comments and hints I have pieces together over the years, she resents any encroachment upon her territory by other females. Especially females who could lay claim to one of “her men”. It all began with her parents divorcing when she was about 3.

So I guess it really has nothing to do with me personally, but it still hurts that all my attempts at friendship have been ignored or rebuffed. So I stopped trying a couple years ago. I just live my life as if she does not exist. I was becoming irrationally angry at her treatment, so it became easier to just pray for her without any emotion and then live my life ignoring this situation entirely.

I don’t think there is a fix for this kind of problem. I think all there is to be done is to endure and to make sure that one doesn’t fall into anger or hatred. That is a great enough challenge when one is being excluded or ignored anyway.

So good luck. Know that you are not alone in experiencing this.

Unfortunately, for some people that is just their family dynamic. My siblings are like that. I don’t know why, exactly, but it probably stems from major family shifts after I left home and they moved. I talk more to my sister-in-law than I do to my brother, and my sisters never initiate contact. I call my mom twice a month and have a list of topics to discuss because my mother will not volunteer information. We aren’t together much now because they live so far away, but pretty much they don’t talk to me if we’re all in the same room. I’ll get a greeting back if I initiate, but that’s it.

A few years ago (before we were all on Facebook) I ran an experiment to see how long it would take for a parent or sibling to initiate contact with me if I didn’t. The answer was…four months. 🤷 It was an email from my mom asking if I was alive. Meanwhile, my husband gets antsy if he hasn’t spoken to his parents in the last two days.

I would not take it personally. It’s unlikely that you’ve done anything to offend them. I don’t think it’s a particularly healthy way to live, but you can’t change them. In my case, I keep on calling my mother and sending birthday and Christmas cards even though I get nothing back (except from my SIL), but I no longer expect anything back. For whatever reason, they can’t or won’t.

Drop the rope. You can’t force a relationship on people who don’t want one nor should you try to.

My advice is somewhat contrary to that of PPs, but I don’t find it particularly charitable to continue to try to create a friendship with people who have made it clear that they do not want that type of closeness. For whatever reason, maybe a valid one or perhaps not, they do not want anything more than superficial interactions. Continuing to offer a warmer relationship when they clearly do not wish one is probably only pushing them further away and it’s certainly hurting and frustrating you.

Be pleasant and polite, no more, no less. Meet any overtures with an equal response, but don’t make any yourself. You might even want to skip some gatherings if you find doing this too frustrating over a long period.

I’m the last person who could give useful advice on this issue (my in-laws consider me one step below Old Scratch :p) but you have my prayers.

As I was reading your post, I was thinking
Well, now we know why the rest of them are divorced or single.
No social skills.
NO SOCIAL SKILLS.
I work with someone who is completely clueless. She always says " I have no friends".
We know why. She doesn’t get jokes, she doesn’t inquire about others, she offers no info about herself, she just puts everyone else’s ideas down. Period.
I resolved to not worry about it anymore. if she talks to me fine, If she doesn’t…great.
I suggest you do the same.
I’ll pray for your wounded heart though.
I know it’s hurtful for a caring person to be around people who are just awkward.

👍

For whatever reason, they don’t want to be in a deep relationship. They can’t flat out tell you that without feelings getting hurt, but it shows in their actions. If they were interested in a relationship, by this time you would have seen evidence of it, some kind of reciprocation. That there has been nothing indicates they’re not interested.

I think you’re thinking if you are kinder, nicer that they will turn around, but I doubt it.

I would suggest backing off, giving them space.

With my family, I had tried over the years to reach out, sending cards and letters, then e-mails with no reply. So finally I got the hint and only bother with people who care enough to meet me half way. Otherwise, it will only be an exercise in frustration.

😃

I only have one sibling who I e-mail with on occasion. I come from a family of 11, and if I don’t initate, with the exception of the one sister, they won’t ever initiate. Also, some never answer, ever. So, I have my answer.

I was thinking this SAME exact thing while reading your post CarmeliteNovice.
Bless you for your efforts but since the situation is hurtful to you, I tend to agree with Clare’s method of handling the situation.

Please count me among those that will be praying for you.

The Serenity Prayer helps me when faced with seemingly impossible situations –
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

:blessyou:

Sounds like it’s just “how they are” in their family. Your husband is obviously different! I would also find that difficult, too, coming from a close, chatty and information-sharing family.

I would still be myself around them, just as they are being themselves around you. You’re being appropriately sociable with family members, that’s all. You’re not asking them to spend lots of time with you, or be your best friend. The vast majority of folk would be like you with their in-laws, and maybe it won’t do any harm for them to see that type of polite friendliness from time to time.

Your inlaws are rude and uninterested in getting to know you. The only thing you can do to solve this problem is divorce your husband and marry one with better siblings. Assuming that you are happy with your husband, I would not go that route.

God bless,
Are they your husbands siblings?..could he have a calm talk with them (saying he has noticed that they have been ignoring you and have you done something to offend them…and see what they say)…it may be they just dont like you , maybe they resent you for marrying their brother or they are jealous that their brothers attention and time goes to you and not them…who knows…if they are so petty they will exclude you for no reason then why would you want to befriend them…just pray for them and instead focus on you and your husband and your own family and friends 🙂

here’s a prayer that may help you

Prayer For The Souls In Purgatory Who Can Obtain Fast And Visible Help For Us!

Eternal Father, i offer you the precious blood of jesus, in union with all the masses being said this day throughout the whole world,
For all the holy souls in purgatory, and also for the souls in purgatory whose prayers can obtain fast and visible help, in desperate, complicated, difficult, hopeless, urgent situations.
Amen

And I beg you Eternal Father to please grant to me through the Prayers and Intercessions of The Holy Souls in purgatory the following prayer requests (name requests).
Amen

I would suggest backing off and just letting things be with your siblings-in-law. Be polite and cordial when you see them, but nothing more. Give them their space and if they want to talk to you, they can initiate contact. There is only so much one person can do. A relationship is a two way street. You have made many efforts to try to keep in contact with them.

You know what they are like; don’t expect anything different from them. Do as you please, given they way they are. So, if you contact them, don’t expect a response. Knowing they won’t respond, you can choose to contact them or not. You may prefer to stay home for some get-togetherness, knowing no one will talk with you.

Just keep praying for them, as they are relatives, and don’t take it personally.
