Hello:

Please pray for my son, who has been out of college for a year and still has not found that first “real job” in his field or otherwise. Thanks to the generosity of his college, he still has his student job but that will definitely end at the end of next month.

Please pray for him, and for me, that we might not despair or lose faith in God. And, of course, that he get a job according to God’s Will.

As you see by the Title, I also need advice. For this past year, I’ve been praying every novena I’ve come across for this intention but don’t seem to get any answer. Do I keep praying (“the definition of insanity is to keep doing something expecting a different result”)? Or, do I pray like St. Monica did for her son (I hope it doesn’t take 40 years) and like the widow who nagged the corrupt judge in the Gospels?

Thank you and God bless,

Yes, keep praying. There may be results you never dreamed of, and won’t know this side of Heaven.

BTW, my daughter never got a job in the field of her college major, either. But she’s highly successful in a field she learned from the part-time job the college gave her as part of her financial aid packet. You never know.

Thank you both, especially Agnes Therese! That does give me hope indeed.

God bless,

**Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
enlighten our minds to perceive the mysteries
of the universe in relation to eternity.

Spirit of right judgment and courage,
guide us and make us firm in our baptismal decision
to follow Jesus’ way of love.

Spirit of knowledge and reverence,
help us to see the lasting value of justice
and mercy in our everyday dealings with one another.

May we respect life
as we work to solve problems of family and nation,
economy and ecology.

Spirit of God,
spark our faith,
hope and love into new action each day.

Fill our lives with wonder and awe
in your presence which penetrates all creation.

Amen. **

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

Prayer to St. Joseph for the Unemployed

O Saint Joseph, we pray to you for those who are out of work, for those who want to earn their living or support their families.

You who are the patron of workers; grant that unemployment may vanish from our ranks; that all those who are ready to work may put their strength and abilities in serving their fellowmen and earn a just salary.

You are the patron of families; do not let those who have children to support and raise lack the necessary means. Have pity on our brothers and sisters held down in unemployment and poverty because of sickness or social disorders. Help our political leaders and captains of industry find new and just solutions. May each and every one have the joy of contributing, according to his abilities, to the common prosperity by an honorable livelihood. Grant that we may all share together in the abundant goods God has given us and that we may help underprivileged countries. Amen.

I would try St. Joseph, if you haven’t already. This situation is perfect for him.

God our Father, Creator and Ruler of the universe, in every age you call us to use and develop our gifts for the good of others. With St. Joseph as our guide, help us to do the work you have asked and come to the rewards you have promised. Please grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Thank you and God bless,
Keep praying, but it is really up to your son to go out and pound the pavement, until he gets a job. In this economy, that could be several months of disappointment and rejection, but it must be done.
