It’s a complicated and long situation, but I will try and keep it short to get to the real issue of my post. About 4 years ago, my mother passed away. She had a painful illness that slowly robbed her of her function and life. She and my father were married 37 years. I am one of 3 sisters, my older sister and I were out of the house already. My younger sister and my dad cared for her until she passed (younger sister was 16-18 during her illness). Since she passed, my dad has gone through a lot of phases. He also was in a couple of serious relationships that ended badly, he was so desperate to not be alone but then he got used. Now he is being awfully mean. He has picked up “pick up artist”/“the red pill” kind of stuff, like he is resorting to “negging” and “manspreading” to attract women, and his sole intention, as far as we can tell, is to get laid at all costs. I am at a loss at how to help him other than to keep him in my constant prayers.

Anyway, long story short, my younger sister, who is almost 22, still lives with him when she comes home from college (which he pays for). She has said that the home life is unbearable. My dad has become unpredictable, blowing up over the slightest thing. She says it is like an emotional lottery with him, because she just can’t win, anything she says can make him go off on her. Then he has taken to making crude comments towards her when his “lady friend” is over. He has her over to spend the night multiple times per week.

So, it’s just the summer, she goes back to school in August. Personally, as the well developed 28 year old I am, I would just stick it out. But she is younger, and is almost fully dependent on him still. He pays for her school and school housing, as well as her car, insurance, and gas. She is trying to focus on school and her degree requires a lot of commitment (sports medicine/athletic training).

So my husband and I have an extra bedroom/office, we have always told her she is welcome to stay with us if things get unbearable at home. She decided earlier this month she wanted to move in with us for the summer and we agreed we would take her in. She is getting a part time job and will help with the groceries and what-not. She helps tremendously around the house as well, just with doing the dishes or vacuuming, or mowing, or just whatever she can find to help. I am incredibly grateful to her. In fact, I think this may be an answer to my prayers as I told God I was overwhelmed and I needed help. I don’t feel so overwhelmed anymore and in fact I am off my anxiety medication since she has been helping out even occasionally I am much more on top of things.

Boy this has turned into a book, mostly I would just really appreciate prayers for her and my dad. She is struggling between wanting to have a relationship with him and wanting nothing to do with him. But also, some practical advice might be helpful! She is super helpful…but also she doesn’t seem to know how to live with other people, especially kids! She leaves things lying around the house like shoes and sweaty gym clothes (like she will take off her clothes near the washer, and just leave them there for the baby to chew on!)…things that if you were on your own or with adults would be annoying but no biggie. I’m just a little frustrating with picking up after her too. I guess I also need prayers for patience!

In the long run, it’s a couple months, 10 weeks at most. She will go to school and she plans (as it stands right now) to not move back home next summer, to get an apartment and a job, etc. But anyway, prayers and practical advice are needed, but especially prayers. I do think it’s just patience I need and maybe a pinch of experience she needs.

Focus on the fact that you are sheltering her from a really bad situation. The clothes on the floor are a minimal offense.

You also are not accustomed to having a tenant.

Thank God she has you.

Praying for your family.

👍

Also, this “red pill” stuff, like radical feminism / liberalism, is a form of “gender ideology”. It is a psychological and spiritual sickness. Pray for your father, that he may be freed from it. 😦

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

I will pray for your father. Try not to let the little things bug you about your sister. In fact, try to view it as training for when your kids get older and well, do the same things. 🙂 Having your sister stay with you will be a blessing for you and for her. Focus on the blessings that will come from this temporary living arrangement.

Salutations,
First, occasionally, invite your Dad and girlfriend out to dinner or over your house. That can happen, only, if you’re nearby.
Second, if you had police at the door telling you your sister was killed in a car accident, you’d miss the small things she leaves behind. Buy her a cheap hamper for her room.
Dear Father, you have a plan for us. Jeremiah29 / 11.
Let peace surround this family. St. Michael, the Arch angel defend us in battle. The enemy, in all life’s turmoil, is satan. The Word of God does not return void. If your Dad is grumpy, say,“Dad, Jesus promised to give us peace. I pray you get to feel peaceful. I’m sorry you are so upset.”
LIFE is so short in the whole scheme of things.
By His stripes, may your whole family be healed…
in Christs love

Thanks for your prayers guys and your words of advice. It is truly a blessing to have her here this summer. I love her to death and I am more than happy to help her out of a difficult situation. I just need to remind myself that it is a blessing to have her, and not sweat the small stuff.

I like the comment that it is practice for when my kids are older, that really put it into perspective for me as well 😃

It is so unlike my dad to behave this way, but I have heard from other people that when someone around his age loses a spouse they can react with really bad behavior. I just continue to pray for him.

And can I take the opportunity to say how great my husband has been? She is staying in HIS office, in his game room, with his gaming computer…he was completely selfless and didn’t complain a bit. I knew he would probably be okay with it, but I expected a little whining and moaning about “his” room. He really impressed me with his attitude.

You are a good sister and I will pray for this situation and that God will lead you all forward. Personally, I believe in honest communication. Your sister should try to have an adult conversation with your Dad and may be he will listen and things will change. You should copy this post and let your sister read it. She will see how much you appreciate her and she will get the message about the other issues. Praying for all of you.

I am in a similar situation to yours in that I have a BIL living with us for the next couple of months. Great guy, fantastic with DD, et all. I admit, though, that the messiness does bug me. 😉

One thing I’ve found helpful is to phrase it as concern for his stuff, rather than annoyance at a mess. I.e., “Fred, I noticed you left your glasses/phone/shaver/whatever out. I’d hate for Miss Two-Year-Old to break or misplace them–she’s already destroyed one pair of my glasses.” I say it pretty casually, and there aren’t any hard feelings either way. There’s still some mess, but there’s less of it overall. Perhaps you could do something similar–“I’d hate for Baby to chew through your shoelaces, you know how teething babies are!”

Perhaps your sister being a slob is one of the reasons your father blows up at her? Just saying. It’s not unreasonable to expect an adult who is living rent free to not treat the home like a flophouse. Tell your sister you’re happy she’s there, but she’s expected to pick up after herself. How hard is that?

Please don’t get the impression she is being slobby, just things like leaving your dirty clothes next to the washer while you shower and then putting them in after, or leaving your shoes in the common area because you are going to wear them again. She isn’t slobby in the least bit, just not a conscious of the fact there are small children around. TBH, she is getting better every day.

I know she needs to have an adult talk with my dad, but she is scared. She is almost completely financially dependent on him, he pays for her school and housing and her car and gives her money for food and gas. He has asked she NOT have a job during school because he wants her to be able to focus on school. I have talked to her about it and she’s really too emotional and not in a good place to talk to him. I have recommended she talk to him after she moves out for school, so they aren’t forced to be close to each other. We talk quite a bit about it, she knows I feel she should talk to him but she is too worried. He has pretty much complete financial control over her, she has a PT job for the summer but that is it.

She is seeing a counselor regularly as well. Right now I want to provide a safe place for her, where she feels comfortable. You should be able to feel safe in your home. I will suggest she have an adult conversation with him when she gets moved out for school and things have cooled off a little bit, when she is a bit less emotional and feels safe and secure in her living arrangements.

Could she go ahead and get a job anyway? Almost everyone I knew in college worked jobs at the school (many of us had work/study awards for this purpose.) We didn’t work a ton so didn’t make a ton, but even $75-100/week adds up over time when you’re not paying rent, utilities, or for food.

Well, my dad requested that she not get a job, he said school was more important. In my eyes, he will not withdraw the school support no matter if he agrees with her or not, its’ just not on the table for him (as I see it). Therefore, I don’t have the same fear that if she greatly offends him he will cut off support that she does, but it doesn’t matter how I feel.

My dad had two daughters who went to college before her who both worked, one dropped and one graduated (with great grades). I think he just thinks back on his college experience and would rather she not work, thinks it will be more likely she graduate. (Another reason I don’t think he’d ever withdraw school support.) I don’t know if she will continue to do her PT job when she goes back to school.

It’s a complicated situation, and although she is an adult she is still very young. I look back on when I was 21 and I did not have the same knowledge and emotional capacity I have now (obviously). And I think my dad may be depressed or have some other mental issues. I do know (back before he got on this “red pill”/“PUA” kick) he was on antidepressants, but I don’t think he is now. You can’t make someone get treatment though unless they want it.

It sounds to me like he is able to control her with money. She will never be free as long as she is willing to accept his money. Perhaps she should join one of the military services. I don’t know what else advise I could give her. For you, think hard about setting fair and realistic boundaries - which sounds like what you are doing.

Sounds to me that you and your sister are doing good. I think this post just originated from the normal human need to vent once in a while

I think you are completely right. We are doing just fine, and I do appreciate the prayers!
