Hello everyone,

First time poster here.

My wife and I (and our son who will be born in about a month) are in the process of looking to buy our first home. We found a house we really liked, but we discovered afterward that a murder had taken place in the home. It is what is known as a stigmatized property. We are both very devout Catholics and if we moved forward and purchased the home, we would have our local priest come in and say Mass in the home and bless every room.

I am saddened that such a tragedy occurred in the house, but I am confident that my wife and I could transform it into a place where a large faith-filled family would live each day for God and make it a place where God is welcome. A priest friend appropriately pointed out that we hold a belief that anything, any person or even any place can be redeemed by the power and presence of Christ. We are both still praying and discerning about how to approach this house. I think I have gotten to a point where I feel confident about buying it. My wife is not quite there at this point. We are going to try to discern it out this weekend and come to a decision by early next week.

So I guess my reason for registering and posting here is to ask for a few prayers for our discernment, and perhaps some advice about the situation for either myself or my wife.

Personally I would not buy a house known about tragedy and horrible things happened there before. Of course you can have the house blessed and ignore the history of it. But I just would not feel comfortable about living in it. There are many other choices on the market. Plus if your baby is coming in one month, it may be not a good time to go through closing, moving, settling etc at such a critical time that needs lot of adjustment. This is just my personal point of view. God bless!
 
Any really old house has had people die in it, some under very sad circumstances. However, if you do buy it, make sure you get it at a substantial discount to cover any future difficulty with selling it. I would also feel happier if I were able to substantially renovate the rooms in which the murder happened so that it would be, in effect, a different room. I might not buy it at all if the crime were sufficiently notorious.

That said, do you need to buy a house right now? Babies are perfectly happy in apartments or rental homes. You’ll find that your views on what you need in a house will develop as your baby gets older and new kids appear. We’ve got three kids and are just buying our first home this coming week, and my ideas about what we need in a house have changed a lot over the years. You’re also going to learn a lot more about the nuances of school districts as your child gets bigger.

It goes without saying that you’ll need a lot of money (both for the downpayment and for maintenance emergencies) to buy a house and that it may be much more expensive than you expect to have a new baby. It might make sense to wait on the house until the hospital bills have cleared and you have a good sense of what your new financial situation is going to be like with a baby.

Yes, have the house blessed by a Priest to remove any ghosts that might be lingering around. I personally wouldn’t buy a house like that.
 
Nope, I’d run the other way. Ever see the show “A Haunting”? You’re living the first five minutes, where the cute young couple finds this amazing house in their price range. They decide to buy it even though there was a murder/suicide etc. there.
 
Yes, even tho I wouldn’t go into a haunted house, I still love to watch Ghosthunters and now they have this new show called “Deep South Paranormal”, and “The Haunted Collector” is another good one too.
 
I’m not superstitious, it wouldn’t bother me. If you love the property, buy it.
 
I think this is a rather superstitious attitude… it is only a house, with walls and a floor. Even if there was a murder, that does not mean it is possessed, and blessings should take care of that. The house itself, like all good things, belongs to God.
