This may sound like a silly question, but why aren’t the words please and thank you in prayers? When I pray, I add the words, “…please give us this day our daily bread” and “…please pray for us sinners”. And I say thank you in my prayers. I feel like without the please, then I am demanding instead of requesting.

Do you pray with manners?

Remember that those prayers are ancient and not composed in English.

I, too, add those words at times. I see nothing wrong with it if it helps you pray. God bless!

I know that sometimes I don’t. That is, when something very difficult is going on I can sometimes be more demanding than pleading. I usually land up telling God I am sorry for being rude, after I have some time to cool off or relax.

As a rule I do say please and take time to thank God, but can always do better. I see no reason for us to not have manners when praying. I have even discussed by “slips in this area” in confession, because I just really am sorry for times I have been like a bratty kid when asking for God’s help, instead of a thankful and needy child in God’s care.
