Last night at mass I heard the man sitting (kneeling) behind me saying “something” when the priest would raise the host and chalice. He was barely speaking, so I assume he was saying a prayer to himself . Is there a standard / common prayer that people pray during these times? I have never heard of one (or if I have, I have forgotten it). I usually just thank God for allowing me to be there at mass and receive the Eucharist.

I guess I should have asked him after mass, but I didn’t think of it at the time!

My Lord and my God -– I don’t remember ‘learning’ that this is what we say… but I have always said this in my heart - and then several years ago I went to a Mass where a man pronounced in a loud barritone voice ‘My Lord and my God’ so I maybe somewhere I was ‘taught’ this was what we respond to within our hearts…
Blessings

My Lord and my God -–
Yes.
We have just witnessed a miracle. Ordinary bread and wine are now the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ.

As I gaze at the elevated host I always find myself repeating the words of Saint Thomas the doubter:

My Lord and my God!!!

:signofcross:

I often add “I believe; help my unbelief” to Thomas’ prayer 🙂

Great post. The story of St. Thomas the doubter when he said those words was part of the Gospel in the EF today, John 20: 19-31 Were they for the OF?

Thanks to you (and the others who replied) for the info. It is quite ironic that we heard those words in the Gospel reading today! (or last night for me).

As an additional note, and an invitation for someone to do some more research,

There used to be an indulgence attached to praying “my Lord and my God” at the elevation of the Host, does anyone know if this still stands?

From today’s Gospel, after St. Thomas (doubting Thomas) places his fingers in Jesus’ wounds he says “My Lord & my God!” (Jn 20:28)

At the Consecration i always say "Dominus Meus et Deus Meus, My Lord & my God (JN 20:28), Lord i believe, help my unbelief (Mk 9:24), Lord save me (Mt 14:30), Miserere mei Deus (have mercy on me, O God)(Ps 51)

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!

Same Gospel story. I don’t recall if it was from John or another Gospel, and I haven’t checked out the other Gospels.

When the Chalice is raised, we can add: “…and Precious Blood of Jesus: wash away our sins.”.

This happened 2 me also,in my parish most people say it,but not out loud.
I thought it was appropriate, so I picked it up,nd sometimes I add a little petition to it.
