In a very rare telephone conversation two days ago, I came to realize that “an old friend” located in a distant state is in poor physical and SPIRITUAL health. He and I were educated in a Catholic High School over 50 years ago. Please offer your prayers for him as he told me bluntly that he has serious doubts about Catholicism and the existence of God. [BIBLEDRB][/BIBLEDRB]

Prayers for your friend for his physical and spiritual well being. May the Holy Spirit kindle in him some fire for the Faith and strength to cope with these struggles.

Perhaps you should purchase a book for your friend called “My Descent Into Death” by Howard Storm. HE didn’t that God was real either, UNTIL he died and went to hell! Then JESUS HIMSELF RESCUED him!

If you’re friend doesn’t read, then perhaps he could look at the You Tube videos of Howard Storm telling people that atheism is NOT the way to eternal happiness.

That said, you bring up an interesting point. Your friend is not uncommon, and in fact I’m hearing more and more of this as I get older. I personally don’t think the Catholic Church does a good enough job addressing the spiritual needs of many of its members. For many years, I myself simply went through the motions every weekend simply because that’s how I was taught in Catholic school, and I attended two grade schools and one high school! In all that time I can count on ONE HAND the amount of good religion teachers that I had who could actually take the time and explain to us in an interesting way the love of God. The rest of them focused on the rules of the Catholic Church and the Catechism. For that matter, numerous priests that I’ve heard giving sermons over the years fell into this same category, which is why I search out many different churches to find priests that actually do an excellent job of giving good sermons However I shouldn’t have to do that, and neither should anyone else. One old Jesuit (who does give great sermons) told me: “Trust me, I grew up with bad homilies. The problem is that public speaking is not emphasized in the seminary.” That’s pretty sad, if you ask me, because all of that which I just described has given so many people a textbook knowledge of God and NOT an actual RELATIONSHIP with God through His Son Jesus Christ.

I realize (once again) that I’m going to incur the wrath of some people here, but the sad fact is that many of us (especially those from my generation and the one before which is where you and your friend originate) were taught that to serve God, you will do it by serving His Church. Yeah, well that’s the equivalent of saying you joined the military to serve your country, but you didn’t really know the President of the United States who is your Commander-in Chief. You know who HE IS, and you may have a textbook knowledge of him, but that does NOT MEAN that you KNOW him! Well, the same holds true for an actual relationship with God.

Talk to your friend and tell him to talk with God like he is talking to his best friend in the entire universe! Tell him to talk with God using his own conversational patterns and NOT the stained-glass language that so many of us were taught when we were younger.

True Story: On many occasions (not all) I would be driving around in my car ranting to God because I was angry or upset or saddened by some event in my life. I would then tell God that I was ready to listen to Him. On more than one occasion, I heard on the radio “Carry On Wayward Son” by Kansas, or “Let It Be” by the Beatles, or “Ooohh Child” by the Five Stairsteps, or “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey. Note then when I would be in these moods, that I was NOT praying the prescribed prayers by the Catholic Church, but I was actually speaking in my own conversational voice (not the stained-glass language). Perhaps your friend would benefit from actually asking God Himself to open up his heart and mind so that he could actually listen and feel God’s presence in his own life. Jesus wants a personal relationship with your friend and you as well. Ask Jesus to join you for a cup of coffee or a cold beer or whatever you prefer, and He will be there.

May the Peace of the Risen Lord Be Upon You & Your Friend.

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

For Help in Trials

Most holy apostle St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the name of the traitor who delivered your beloved Master into the hands of His enemies has caused you to be forgotten by many. But the Church honors and invokes you universally as the patron of hopeless cases–of things despaired of. Pray for me who feels so hopeless. Make use, I implore you, of that particular privilege accorded to you of bringing visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need, that I may receive the consolations and succor of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings, in particular 1377Louis’s old classmate , and that I may bless God with you and all the elect throughout eternity. I promise you, O Blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, and I will never cease to honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to do all in my power to encourage devotion to you. Amen.

Prayer for a Miracle

God of all creation, you who spoke a simple command and brought forth light from
the darkness, I ask you now to send forth your miracle-working power to heal 1377Louis’s old classmate. You cleansed the lepers, opened the eyes of the blind and by
speaking a simple command, you empowered the crippled to rise up and walk.
You sent forth your life-giving power to all those in need, including those you raised from
the dead. I ask you to send forth your healing power into 1377Louis’s old classmate’s body and give him the strength to fight his illness. I ask this through my Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

O Star of the Sea, help us, and show us that you are our Mother.

O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and earth, we humbly ask you from the depths of our heart to help us in this necessity. There are none who can withstand your power.
O show us that you are our Mother.

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. Sweet Mother, we place this cause in your hands. Amen.

The Memorare
Remember,
O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known,
that anyone who fled to thy protection,
implored thy help
or sought thy intercession,
was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee,
O Virgin of virgins, my Mother.
To thee I come, before thee I stand,
sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petition,
but in thy mercy hear and answer me.
Amen.

Learning Christ
Teach me, my Lord,
to be sweet and gentle in all the events of life;
in disappointments, in the thoughtlessness of others,
in the insincerity of those I trusted,
in the unfaithfulness of those on whom I relied.

Let me put myself aside,
to think of the happiness of others,
to hide my little pains and heartaches, so
……that I may be the only one to suffer from them.

Teach me to profit by the suffering that comes across my path.
Let me so use it that it may mellow me,
……not harden nor embitter me; that it may make me patient, not irritable;
……that it may make me broad in my forgiveness,
……not narrow, haughty and over-bearing.

May no one be less good for having come within my influence.
No one less pure, less kind, less noble for having been a
……fellow-traveler in our journey toward Eternal Life.

As I go my rounds from one distraction to another,
let me whisper, from time to time, a word of love to Thee.
May my life be lived in the supernatural, full of power and good,
……and strong in its purpose of sanctity.

“O Glorious Prince of the heavenly host, St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in the battle and in the terrible warfare that we are waging
against the principalities and powers,
against the rulers of this world of darkness,
against the evil spirits.
Come to the aid of man, whom Almighty God created immortal,
.....made in His own image and likeness,

“Fight this day the battle of the Lord,
together with the holy angels, as already thou hast fought the leader of the

.....to resist thee, nor was there place for them any longer in Heaven.
That cruel, ancient serpent, who is called the devil or Satan who seduces
.....the whole world, was cast into the abyss with his angels.
Behold, this primeval enemy and slayer of men has taken courage.
Transformed into an angel of light, he wanders about with all the
.....multitude of wicked spirits, invading the earth in order
.....to blot out the name of God and of His Christ,
.....to seize upon, slay and cast into eternal perdition souls destined
.....for the crown of eternal glory.
This wicked dragon pours out, as a most impure flood,
the venom of his malice on men of depraved mind and corrupt heart,
the spirit of lying, of impiety, of blasphemy, and the pestilent breath of impurity,
.....and of every vice and iniquity.

“These most crafty enemies have filled and inebriated with gall and bitterness

In the Holy Place itself, where the See of Holy Peter and the Chair of Truth has
.....been set up as the light of the world,
.....they have raised the throne of their abominable impiety,
.....with the iniquitous design that when the Pastor has been struck, the sheep
.....may be scattered.

“Arise then, O invincible Prince,
bring help against the attacks of the lost spirits to the people of God,
.....and give them the victory.
They venerate thee as their protector and patron;
.....in thee holy Church glories as her defense against the

to thee has God entrusted the souls of men to be established in heavenly beatitude.
Oh, pray to the God of peace that He may put Satan under our feet,

Offer our prayers in the sight of the Most High,
.....so that they may quickly find mercy in the sight of the Lord;

Litany of Humility
:signofcross:
O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.
From the desire of being esteemed,
Deliver me, Jesus. [Repeat after each below]
From the desire of being loved…
From the desire of being extolled …
From the desire of being honored …
From the desire of being praised …
From the desire of being preferred to others…
From the desire of being consulted …
From the desire of being approved …
From the fear of being humiliated …
From the fear of being despised…
From the fear of suffering rebukes …
From the fear of being calumniated …
From the fear of being forgotten …
From the fear of being ridiculed …
From the fear of being wronged …
From the fear of being suspected …

That others may be loved more than I,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it. [Repeat after each below]
That others may be esteemed more than I …
That, in the opinion of the world,
… others may increase and I may decrease …
That others may be chosen and I set aside …
That others may be praised and I unnoticed …
That others may be preferred to me in everything…
That others may become holier than I, provided that I may
…become as holy as I should…

Prayer to the Holy Spirit
by Saint Antiochus
O Holy Spirit,
most merciful Comforter:
You proceed from the Father
in a manner beyond our understanding.
Come, I beseech You,
and take up your abode in my heart.
Purify and cleanse me from all sin,
and sanctify my soul.
Cleanse it from every impurity,
water its dryness,
melt its coldness,
and save it from its sinful ways.
Make me truly humble and resigned,
that I may be pleasing to You,
and that You might abide with me forever.
Most Blessed Light,
most Amiable Light,
enlighten me.
O Rapturous Joy of Paradise,
Fount of Purest Delight,
My God, give yourself to me
and kindle in my innermost soul the fire of Your love.
My Lord, instruct, direct,
and defend me in all things.
Give me strength against all immoderate fears
and against despondency.
Bestow upon me a true faith,
a firm hope,
and a sincere and a perfect love.
Grant that I always do Your Most Gracious Will.
Amen.

Prayer for All Virtues
O Almighty and all-knowing God,
without beginning or end,
who art the giver, preserver, and rewarder of all virtue:

Grant me to stand firm on the solid foundation of faith,
be protected by the invincible shield of hope,
and be adorned by the nuptial garment of charity;

Grant me by justice to obey thee,
by prudence to resist the crafts of the Devil,
by temperance to hold to moderation,
by fortitude to bear adversity with patience;

Grant that the goods that I have I may share liberally
with those who have not,
and the good that I do not have I may seek with humility
from those who have;

Grant that I may truly recognize the guilt of the evil I have done,
and bear with equanimity the punishments I have deserved;
that I may never lust after the goods of my neighbour,
but always give thanks to thee for all thy good gifts…

Plant in me, O Lord, all thy virtues,
that in divine matters I might be devout,
in human affairs wise,
and in the proper needs of the flesh onerous to no one…

And grant that I may never rush to do things hastily,
nor balk to do things demanding,
so that I neither yearn for things too soon,
nor desert things before they are finished.
Amen.

Praying. . . . Prayer of apology and thanksgiving . . . because of forgetfulness to say “thank You” to Our Lord for all the blessings He pours on us and we do not even realize it. In addition, the thread could be closed if only a couple of people post on it and I want to get the “thank You” in. 😃

I believe most firmly that You watch over all who hope in You,
and that we can want for nothing when we rely upon You in all things.
Therefore I am resolved for the future…to cast all my cares upon You.
People may deprive me of worldly goods and status.
Sickness may take from me my strength and the means of serving You.
I may even jeopardize our relationship by sin, but my trust shall never leave me.
I will preserve it to the last moment of my life, and the powers of hell shall seek
…… in vain to grab it from me.
Let others seek happiness in their wealth and in their talents.
Let them trust in the purity of their lives,
the severity of their mortifications,
in the number of their good works,
the enthusiasm of their prayers,
as for me, my Rock and my Refuge, my confidence in you fills me with hope.
For You, my Divine Protector, alone have settled me in hope.
“This confidence can never be vain. No one, who has hoped in God, has
…… ever been confounded.”
I am assured, therefore, of my eternal happiness,
…… for I firmly hope in it and all my hope is in You.
“In You, O loving God, have I hoped: let me never be confounded.”
I know too well that I am weak and changeable. I know the power of
…… temptation against the strongest virtue.
I have seen stars fall and foundations of my world crack;
…… these things do not alarm me.
While I hope in You, I am sheltered from all misfortune,
…… and I am sure that my trust shall endure,
…… for I rely upon You to sustain this unfailing hope.
Finally, I know that my confidence cannot exceed Your generosity, and that I
…… shall never receive less than I have hoped for from You.
Therefore I hope that You will sustain me against my evil inclinations,
…… that You will protect me against the deceitful attacks of the evil one,
…… and that You will cause my weakness to triumph over every hostile force.
I hope that You will never cease to love me and that I shall love You unceasingly.
“In You, O loving God, have I hoped: let me never be confounded.”

St Claude de la Colombiere, pray for us!

Apology and Thanksgiving Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Creator of all and source of all goodness and love,
please look kindly upon us,
as we ask for forgiveness for not giving You thanks.
Please receive our heartfelt apology for the lack of gratitude.
Remind us at all times that You are always worthy of our thanks.

Thank You, Heavenly Father,
for all the graces and blessings
You have bestowed upon us:
our faith and religious heritage;
the Priests who bring us the Sacraments;
our life, food and shelter;
our health, the love we have for one another;
our family and friends.
Thank You for those things You so generously give us
…and of which we are not even aware.
Dear Father, in Your infinite generosity, please grant us the grace of having
…less “give me” and more gratitude throughout the coming
…years so that we may be aware that anything from You is good
…for You turn the “bad” into blessings for us.
Please Lord, grant us the grace of not forgetting that we can thank You
…over and over again for the same gift – and if we
…forget, may our Guardian Angel remind us.
Thank You, Lord.
I Love You, Lord.
Amen… …by Luz María

Hail Mary,
full of grace,
the Lord is with Thee,
blessed are Thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit
of Thy womb,
Jesus.

Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Let Nothing Disturb You
Let nothing disturb you,
Let nothing frighten you,
All things are passing away:
God never changes.

Patience,
Obtains all things,
Whoever has God
Lacks nothing:
God alone suffices.
