Is there any hope for little Anneliese to see? I was just wondering if this is something we should be praying for (her vision to be restored).

Hi Mommy-girl Sam, and thank you asking such a “mommy” question. Yes, at this time the main hope is that her vision will be restored. The family and baby have been through a lot.

The baby’s condition was discovered when she was only a few months old and it was grave enough that the medical plan was to remove her left eye. However, when she was in the hospital awaiting that surgery, the final exam revealed cancers in her right eye too so the doctors removed neither eye.

That’s when the chemotherapy began. The first eight months of chemo worked; then it stopped working. Now she’s in the second month of a new chemo regimen and it’s working (so far). At home we do protocols to encourage use of the weaker (left eye) by patching the right and it’s clear she has had some vision restored in the more damaged eye. She doesn’t much like the patching since her arms have to be braced, wrist to shoulder, or she’d pull the patch off but she is willing to let me “talk her through” some Baby Einstein tapes while sitting on my lap and that’s a help. Also, she’s discovered she can do some pretty effective crawling even with her arms braced so she likes that too.

Her condition is called retinoblastoma.

Keeping the eyes is an if-fy propostion since the eyes are so close to the brain. However, her care is excellent and that’s why the mother needs to keep working; Anneliese’s care is tied to the mother’s medical insurance. The good news is that this cancer does not re-appear after the age of five. However, these children are much more likely to develop other childhood cancers as well. Many prayers are needed; thank you for offering yours. I can’t tell you what a joy it is to care of this happy baby. When children are this stricken while so young, they have no frame of reference as to “wanting their lives back.” This is her life. It’s much harder on the adults who consider all possibilities.

:blessyou:

My husband and I will be praying for her to be healed of her cancer, protected from relapse (or the start of a new cancer), and for the complete restoration of both of her eyes. She sounds like such a special little one to be such a happy baby through all of this! This family is so blessed to have you caring for their daughter.

The blessing is enormous for me as you can imagine. Thank you.

:yup:

aww this poor little girl, i’ll be praying for her and the family.:gopray2:

Again, thanks to all for the prayers.
Last week was five days of chemo so this week will be (already started) days of nausea, vomiting, white blood cell count drop to Zero (no immunity), and if as other times, some days in the hospital. This is to be expected. What is unexpected is how sweet and dear and patient the baby is with the process.

God love her! Keeping her in daily prayer…

Barb
Thank you. I’m sure that the prayers are helping. She was sick (at home) until WED a.m. but now seems a bit better. I had a great day with her WED and will be with her again all day tomorrow. So far, so good.

Keeping sweet Baby Anneliese in my daily prayers :gopray: May you have another great, successful day with her today, Catharina.

Again, to Any and All, thank you for the prayers. Nothing is more important for this baby, IMO. Tonight I’ll spend the overnight with her - having already been with her from 8 to 5. I can tell the mama is so worn out and the grandma (maternal) just arrived from Europe last night. She’s worn out from jet lag. The dad had to take a business trip 'til next WED and the baby had a very rough night last night. I insisted on doing the overnight, a free-bie, in honor of my own mother who died 3yrs ago tomorrow.

My mother raised eight children and lived to be 88. I’m a mother too and I truly admire parents who have struggles. I’m grateful I’m healthy enough to do this since “my own baby boy” is 32 yrs old.

God bless all of you!

Baby Annaliese did very well last night. She awoke eight or nine times but let me comfort her until 5am when she demanded her mama . The mama came and the baby nursed and then she slept two more hours. That means the mama and grandma and sister and young au pair (also from Europe) had a total of nine+ hours of sleep. This morning, all looked terribly refreshed, thank heaven - and Baby was quite cheerful. We’re guessing that maybe the darkness of night time disturbs her since she has so many issues with her eyes. From now on: a nightlight!

Blessed be God and thanks for the prayers!

dear God, please help this baby and her family in their struggles with this cross they are bearing. :gopray2:

Please allow me to try to compose a prayer now, if you don’t mind.

Dear St. Lucy, patroness of eye problems,
Code:
Please, please pray to Jesus our loving Savior for this poor baby. She is so young and yet it is so soon in her life that she has this terrible trial. If you will remember, St. Lucy, I picked you as my Confirmation Saint because I was so moved by your story of how you pledged your virginity to God and even died for Him in order to stay pure. If you can, please return the favor for this poor baby in her sickness. Ask God for His healing power to come upon this child and ask God to send His angels to accompany the child in the hospital room as well. Many thanks in advance!
Tracy

O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen
