My mother is an abusive drunk and has been all of my life. Every year there has to be some kind of crisis on Christmas or any special occasion, so she can feel sorry for herself and put us down. I am at the point in my life where it doesn’t hurt me anymore, but it makes me angry and I cannot hold my tongue anymore. Long, long story. If things are going smoothly she will find something to be upset about. Tonight she was complaining that noone helps her, but her friends kids don’t let their mother lift a finger. First of all, we do help, but it’s never good enough and she doesn’t remember from year to year. For example. She quit drinking for several years when I was in my late teens and 20’s. Even though she was a 'dry drunk" I supported her by attending meetings with her and always remembering her with a card on her anniversary date. At one point when she tried to sober up again in my 30’s, I drove from another town just to go to meetings with her, once a week. Recently she was complaining to my Dad and me that her kids where not supportive of her when she quit drinking!! Also, recently she had me get her a bottle of whiskey while I was out. I know. I shouldn’t have enabled her and do not as a rule, but sometimes it is too hard to say no, because I am living under her roof due to illness and underemployment. While at the liquor store, the woman behind the counter told me that my Mom was worried that her kids, (me & siblings) wouldn’t be able to throw a good 50th wedding anniversary. We are all financially in trouble, but we planned on doing something simple. It was awkward and embarrassing. Over the years she gets drunk and on the phone and tells everyone our business and exaggerates it to make it worse, etc etc etc. I could go on. Anyway, her friends mother is a wonderful woman who nurtured and raised wonderful successful kids. I hate to put it this way, but our mother is poison to our family. I pray to be compassionate toward her, because I am a compassionate person, but I just want to get back out on my own, tell her I love her and forgive her, and then never talk to her again. She endured some difficult things in her childhood and does have a heavy struggle within herself which she told me about last year and which I could have lived my whole life not knowing. I do forgive her as best I can, but I honestly don’t feel like I love her. So sorry for the long request. Thank you for your prayers regarding this and also for a special intention regarding a friend.
