Hello everybody,

I need your prayers urgently. May 2017 marks the one year anniversary that I have graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in broadcast journalism and I have no job. Since May 2016 and even months prior to graduation, I been having difficulty finding a journalism job at small-market television news stations across the country. Many news directors, recruiters, and executive producers have constantly shut the door in my face, some have lied to me about a job and even one in particular attempted to luring me to their station after I said no and prior to said * “you are getting in the way of the information and you will never be a reporter” *and lied throughout the entire hiring process, especially about what my references said which were later false (this did cause some tension between me and my references) and the station called several months later to lure me to their station. The hiring manager there is not a good person. Other television news stations have constantly shamed me for being unemployed and use it against. One station was accusing me of not finding a job saying, “Are you actually diligently looking for a job or just sitting around and doing nothing? I am not sure if you are really actually job searching at all and/or haven’t worked hard enough.”

Other stations were no-calls and no-shows for in-person/phone/Skype interviews and never provided a notification or reschedule. two other stations, for example, jetted off on vacation and never rescheduled the interview as promised.

Other stations say they will interview me and never did. Then, other stations have tossed me around and treated me like a ragdoll.

I have gotten 20 + interviews and no job offer. Not many of the companies are not giving me feedback. Two companies who rejected me said that they are just looking for someone that I am starting to feel like I am the problem or the source of it. My parents and their pastor (they are not Catholic) do not understand the job search process in the journalism field and have blatantly insulted other television news stations, the geographical location of the television stations, and the positions I did received interviews for. They want me to stay within the Washington DC-Baltimore-Northern Virginia region forever. The actual truth is that the DC-MD-Northern Virginia-Baltimore Area is a national market and very saturated with experienced candidates (10 years or more) that are not entry level, and I cannot compete with that. My past internships, connections, network, recruiters, and others have advised me more than 5 times to start my career at a small market television station. My parents don’t want to accept that. It is very difficult for me to share my struggles with them about the job search as they could simply blame me for it and think (as with every job) that I don’t carry myself and assume I have bad print handwriting skills. However, the job search process in the journalism field is very different than typical professions but similar to other processes in music, entertainment, and others.

For the last 12 months, I have been diligently looking, applying, and interviews for more than 400 + employment opportunities in my chosen field (journalism) and nothing has come about.

I have tried applying to unpaid and paid internships, volunteering, and freelancing opportunities, I cannot get anything. I have even tried public television, public radio, and public access channels, and still nothing. Same can be said for print/digital journalism if you are wondering. I cannot visit the small-market journalism companies and television news stations as they won’t accept in-person visit or submit my resume in-person.

I have also applied to countries outside of the United States, especially Canada and the United Kingdom. I mostly been rejected from media outlets in those countries that have entry-level opportunities and programs for recent graduates. I tried Hagerstown/Western Maryland, Delmarva Peninsula, Harrisonburg/Shenandoah Valley, Charlottesville/Central Virginia, Eastern North Carolina/Wilmington, West VA, parts of PA, Upstate New York, and many other small towns and small cities stations, and still nothing.

It is really unclear if I will get anything. Everything has gone downhill and it is not working out for me.

I have tried non-journalism jobs and it is not working out there. I also have recently had interviews temp and employment agencies - the majority of agencies in my area do not specialize in journalism and communications. I am looking for jobs outside my field. I have taken tests with them, but it is very unclear if these temp and employment agencies will actually help me. They may not.

I contacted my alumni network/former classmates and college career center network, many of them won’t help me. Some claim they don’t have time, make false promises, and/or provide unhelpful advice. Even says they will keep me in mind, but nothing comes up. My school, past internships, and connections are just telling me to keep trying to find a job in the field and said things will become easier. Others just tell me things I have already done.

I have several journalism job accounts on various websites. I tried Catholic jobs and Catholic parishes. Nothing.

I do not have any financial income. I am reluctant to ask my parents for money. I can’t ask them as they are not going to lend me money and it will be difficult for me to pay them back without a job.

I don’t know if I will ever relocate to another state and leave the Washington DC - Maryland - Baltimore, Northern, Virginia area for good.

Sometimes I constantly wonder if I made a mistake or regrets. I do feel like I have made mistakes and regrets. I do blame myself.

I don’t know what will happen to me. I don’t know if I will ever get a job. I am considering discontining the job search in my field.

Please pray for me as my future is uncertain.

Perhaps you could try a Career Councillor, perhaps they could show you a new way
to try, could be something simple that no one thought about ,

Praying for you,

Hello dancer,
Looking for work can be very disheartening. I know how much. I encourage you, however, to stay upbeat. Quite a bit of pessimism comes through in your post.

People will say they’ll keep you in mind, but that is not to be counted on. Not replying to applications seems to be the way it works these days. Some of those employers may get back to you months later, sometimes not at all.

I encourage you not to give up. Pray to St. Joseph, patron saint of workers, that he will guide you to what God has for you.

Meanwhile. as you are doing, perhaps you could continue looking for any work in another field. Plenty of college grads are working in retail, temp jobs, etc while they search for what they are qualified in.

A suggestion: when you are turned down for a job, ask what you could do to make yourself more employable. What you could have done on the interview to make it more positive. You may get some helpful feedback.

Do not badmouth any previous prospective employers, say only positive things about references, and everyone.

Maybe you could do some volunteer work for a station, so they can get to know you. Once you find a temp job, consider volunteering, helping out in some way.

Have you heard of informational interviews? these are short interviews for gathering info about breaking into a field; they are not job interviews but they can be very helpful.
Praying for your intentions.

Although it may be difficult to perfectly sympathize what another is going through, I can say that I have some understanding of the feelings, struggles, and hardships that you may be experiencing. I am definitely praying that God Blesses you with great news and great opportunities. The only words of wisdom I have to offer, which I’m sure you’ve heard before, is to stay strong, stay faithful, and always keep an open mind. God Bless!🙂

I have tried a career counselor and they said they cannot help me in my field. The only one that is free is the university’s career center. I have reached out to them and they do not wish to help me.

**Yes. I do not count on the *“I will keep you mind part.” ***I reached out to alumnis, employers, and many others and its unclear if they will help. They do not care.

I encourage you not to give up. Pray to St. Joseph, patron saint of workers, that he will guide you to what God has for you.

I have tried retail, sales and other things. I cannot obtain employment in these jobs simply because I don’t have experience in those areas. All of my employment background is in journalism.

A suggestion: when you are turned down for a job, ask what you could do to make yourself more employable. What you could have done on the interview to make it more positive. You may get some helpful feedback.

I have asked for helpful feedback each time I am turned down for a job. None of the hiring managers do not want to say anything. They would say: “we do not discuss applicants’ application. Find other jobs.” I have asked this for interviews and gotten nothing.

Do not badmouth any previous prospective employers, say only positive things about references, and everyone.

Note: I have never badmouth any previous prospective employer, references or anyone.

Maybe you could do some volunteer work for a station, so they can get to know you. Once you find a temp job, consider volunteering, helping out in some way.

** I have said this before. I cannot find or obtain volunteer work at a television station. None of the public television stations in my area and none of the local television news stations have volunteereing opportunities. Same thing with the public access channels. Even the local PBS and NPR stations have declined my volunteering application saying that they do not have anything for me. I have tried the local Catholic parishes and they have turned me down as well as other churches. **

Have you heard of informational interviews? these are short interviews for gathering info about breaking into a field; they are not job interviews but they can be very helpful.

** I heard of informational interviews; however there is no opportunities in my field to attend or try to do informational interviews when you are not longer a student. I have gone to career fairs and asked for opportunities. It is not working out. **

Hello, the one thing I have been told is that it’s easier to get a job when you have a job … any job … so try applying in other fields … a field that is not saturated … take an entry level position even … and then continue your search for the job you truly want … I know this is definitely easier said than done …

You are in my prayers …

Divine Mercy Chaplet

O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You!
O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You!
O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You!

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen.

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

A Prayer to St. Philip the Apostle , for Grace

O Glorious Saint Philip, at the Last Supper you said to Jesus, “Lord, show us the Father and it will be enough for us.” Help us to make this our prayer also and to seek God in all things. Obtain for us the grace to know the Father and Jesus Christ whom he has sent - for in this does eternal life consist.
Amen.

**Good Saint Dymphna, great wonder-worker in every affliction of mind and body, I humbly implore your powerful intercession with Jesus through Mary, the Health of the Sick, in my present need. That M can stay in her home. Saint Dymphna, martyr of purity, patroness of those who suffer with nervous and mental afflictions, beloved child of Jesus and Mary, pray to Them for me and obtain my request.

Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of death. Amen.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Saint Dymphna, Virgin and Martyr, pray for us. Amen.
