I don’t know if people usually request prayers for their animals, so I apologize if this seems strange or greedy.
I’d like to ask you to pray for my family’s dog, Cricket. We have to euthanize her tomorrow because of kidney failure. She’s always been a very good dog. She’s never bit anyone, and she never chewed up our furniture or caused a lot of trouble. She doesn’t deserve this, but she’s not eating anymore and she gets sick constantly. We can’t do anything more to help her. I know it’s said that animals don’t have souls, but I refuse to believe that this is all God has planned for His creatures. So I hope that, wherever Cricket goes next, it’s a good place.
Please also pray for my family. My youngest siblings have always had Cricket, and this is especially hard for them.
Thank you.

It is so sad to lose a loving dog like your cricket. I was in tears as a grown man when I had to have my cancer ridden Marsha to sleep.
I know the beliefs of Aquinas and other Doctors of the Church that animals do not have immortal souls, but how do we know? I leave the fate of all sinless animals that just followed their nature to the love of their Creator.
If there is a new Earth where our actual bodies will exist, and if Our Lord speaks of drinking wine in Paradise, then there is every expectation that ther may be animals in Paradise; thu why not our pets?
Let us pray for all those things we cannot control and put this one as well into His Hands for a solution in our best interests.
Nothing wrong with Hope; it is after all a natural corollary to Faith.

HAving lost 2 dogs that were like children to me, I find comfort in the fact that the love between a person and their pet is very real and never dies. You will remember fondly the things you love about your pet, and that will give you peace and happiness. Prayers for you and your family.

Praying for your intentions.

You and your dog will be in my thoughts and prayers.

My Pooka is somewhere between 13 and 14 (he’s a rescue) and I dread that day.

We will pray for you and your family. We also have a dog named Cricket, she is just a year old next month.

As animal lovers I also can’t accept the idea that animals don’t have souls. I believe they do go to heaven or to be with God and I trust your Cricket will be going there. Not to sound goofy, but maybe our “pups” get to meet each other when they die. So, I hope our Snickers, Muffins and Spirit meet your Cricket.

God made all the animals in this world and I can’t believe he did not provide them with some sort of spirit or soul. Where else, and why else would they have such wonderful personalities and character?

I agree! This also reminds me of my favorite Twilight Zone Episode. The gist of it is a guy was saved by his dog and later while hunting, they end up dying (he was trying rescue the dog that went into too deep water chasing a raccoon). While on the road to afterlife, he is greeted by a man saying he was the intaker (or something like that) for souls. The dog doesn’t seem to care for the intaker too much. The guy starts to enter and the intaker tells him dogs are not allowed. Ultimately the guy will not enter saying he doesn’t want to go anywhere his dog isn’t welcomed. The guy walks further down the road and sits on a rock and starts to ask his dog what they should do and another gentleman meets him while walking up the road. This gentleman asks him if he is so and so and the guy is. The gentleman said this is good and that he was his guide to heaven. The guy said that he already talked to the intaker. The gentleman said that wasn’t the intaker, he is the “guard” for hell. Off the gentleman, guy and dog go to heaven. While walking the guy asks when his wife will join him and the gentleman says that the guy’s wife will be along shortly. 🙂

Prayer For a Dying Pet

“Loving God, our beloved pet and companion, Cricket,
is on her final journey. We will miss her dearly.
We thank you for the gift that she has been to us.
Give us hope that, in your great kindness,
you may restore Cricket in your heavenly Kingdom
according to your wisdom,
which goes beyond our human understanding.”

Amen.

Joining in prayer in confidence that Our Lord will take care of all of God’s creatures.

Almighty God:

This we know: every living thing is yours and returns to you. As we ponder this mystery, we give you thanks for the life of Cricket and we now commit her into your loving hands. Gentle God: fragile is your world, delicate are your creatures, and costly is your love which bears and redeems us all.

Holy Creator, give us eyes to see and ears to hear how every living thing speaks to us of your love. Let us be awestruck at your creation and daily sing your praises. Especially, create within us a spirit of gratitude for the life of this beloved dog Cricket, who has lived among us and given us freely of her love. Even in our sorrow, we have cause for joy for we know that all creatures who died on earth shall live again in your new creation. Amen.

:signofcross:

God bless you in your time of grief.

Anna, I am so sorry to hear about Cricket. I, too, had to send my cat Peaches back to the Creator last month. It hurts so much to love our pets, especially when loving them includes having to say goodbye. While the Church teaches that animal souls are not equal to human souls, I believe that their souls are worthy of an eternity in Heaven. So much of Scripture speaks of God’s creation praising Him. The CCC even says that animals give God praise and glory by their mere existence. So many saints had the incredible ability to communicate with animals, and they realized that God works through all of His creation.

Cricket will soon be happy and pain-free, and loved in the arms of the Lord. Here is a prayer that I found, that our vet let us recite before Peaches’ departure from this world. My prayers are with you all.

Saying Goodbye to a Dying Pet

In the name of God the Father,
Who created you and all the animals;
in the name of Jesus the Son,
Who spoke of you in parables and stories; and
in the name of the Holy Spirit,
in Whom every creature lives, moves, and has their being,
go now in peace, dear friend.

May you find rest near refreshing waters,
may you lie in cool, green pastures,
and may you warm yourself under the sun that never sets.

You have been my constant companion,
my shadow and confidante,
my comfort and playmate.
You filled my days with life and brought me endless joy.
For this I give thanks to God Who gave you to me.

Now return to your Maker Who eagerly waits for you
as you waited for me at the end of each day.

In the Father’s arms, let there be no more pain.
Let there be no more suffering.
Let there be only light as it was on the day God created you.

For our help is in the name of the Lord, Who made Heaven and earth.
Blessed be the name of the Lord, now and forever. Amen.
