Please pray for my son. He is 10 years old and has developed worsening behavioral problems over the past couple of years and now they have reached a crescendo in which he is failing 5th grade and will be held back, even though he is smart enough and understands all the subjects. He has been lying, not bringing homework home, disobedient. His behavior in class is horrible according to his teacher: he is constantly playing with his pencils as if they are toys, talking in class, refusing to pull out his work to work on. I am at the end of my rope, we have tried everything–rewards, punishments, micromanagment, forcing accountability–and nothing is working. He is always pleasant and easy going ,gets along with people, happy, outgoing, but he just refuses to do what is necessary to succeed. Now he’s failing and will most likely be held back. I don’t know what to do anymore.

I will keep your son and you and your husband in my prayers.
I ask You Lord to give all the guidance and help that is possible.
Please help these parents and the teachers to get to the source of the difficulties, and to be able to help this boy to live a wholesome, happy, and fruitful life.

I knew a your boy just like that in so many ways. A few years later he’s a well-balanced, happy boy, and finally using his intelligence to good purpose. His father was nearly out of his mind with confusion and distress at times…I pray you all get through this…but I pray with hope as well as with sympathy.

Dear Lord Jesus Christ,

I ask you to please guide this little boy. Fill him with Your graces so his behavior will glorify Your name. Also, I ask you to please grant his parents and family paitence and love when working with him. We ask this through the intercession of Dear Mother Mary.

Amen.

Lord I pray that you grant these parents patience and steadfastness in this difficult time. Let them always strive to treat their son with compassion and understanding and letting him know that they love him and that You love him, also. I pray for their son, that he he realizes that you call us all to be the best we can be and to use his talents for your glory. With your grace, O Jesus, this family can emerge stronger and more faithful to you. Amen.

Personally speaking, I can feel for you. It was in the fifth grade that I started doing the exact same things your son is doing now in terms of grades, not paying attention, not doing homework, etc. I didn’t pull out of it until I was a Junior in high school. My parents were incredibly frustrated and tried basically solitary confinement for six weeks, to physical punishment, to enticements and rewards. I wanted to do better, I truly did. For short periods of time, I would, but they were not sustained. The only thing that finally made me try harder was when I realized that I was not getting into college, something I wanted badly. Looking back, I honestly think that I had A.D.D. I’ve never been tested for it, and back in the 70s and 80s they hadn’t heard of such a thing, but from what I have read, the symptoms are very similar to what I experienced. If you haven’t had him checked for that, you might. Be wary of medication, though. I wouldn’t start a child on Ritalin at all. You may just have to be extra-involved with his teachers and have them make sure they notify you of every missed assignment, homework, whatever. Be loving with him, but let it be known that you are going to help him stay on top of his schoolwork. It may get frustrating for him at times, but without it, he may fall behind too far to be able to recover until late in his school years. God bless you and your family.

Dear St. Monica:

You of all people know how we hurt when our children are hurting. Please intercede on behalf of this boy and his parents. Please bless them all and help to resolve this situation quickly and easily.

Amen

I am praying for your son and you.

Have you read or listened to Dr Ray Guarendi before? He is a former CA apologist and I just went to one of his talks a couple of weeks ago. Perhaps he can help you. drray.com/

For your family-

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Amen
