Prayers for relief from OCD/anxiety

Please pray for me for relief from OCD/anxiety. I’ve had it most of my life, and had been doing pretty well. I take medication and see a therapist. But for some reason, the pesky thoughts aren’t going away.

They’re mostly catastrophic thoughts, such as what if this happens, and then this…eventually snowballing out of control. I recently had a bit of a tiff with a friend, and that’s when this started. I’m an adult, but I feared this friend going around spreading rumors about me, etc. (I had a bad experience with this in 6th grade that scarred me). I also worried about being accused of doing something I haven’t done. I’ve always had that fear.

Other than prayers, does anyone have any resources you’d recommend for a Catholic with anxiety? I have a couple of books about it by Gary Zimak which are pretty good. I ordered a book online about the Catholic way of dealing with worry.

Are there also any stories in the Bible you’d recommend? Thanks.🙂

Prayer for Anxiety

Dear Heavenly Father,

I need you now, Lord. I am filled with stress and anxiety. I invite you to come into my turmoil and take these heavy burdens from me. I have reached the end of myself with nowhere else to turn.

One by one, I consider each burden now and lay them down at your feet. Please carry them for me so that I don’t have to. Father, replace the weight of these burndens with your humble and gentle yoke so that I will find rest for my soul today.

Reading your Word brings so much comfort. As I focus on you and your truth, I receive your gift of peace for my mind and heart.

This peace is a supernatural peace I cannot comprehend. Thank you that I can lie down tonight and sleep. I know that you, dear Lord, will keep me safe. I am not afraid because you are always with me.

Holy Spirit, fill me to the depths with a heavenly calm. Flood my soul with your presence. Let me rest in knowing that you, God, are here and in control.

No danger can touch me. There’s nowhere I can go that you are not there already. Teach me how to trust in you completely. Father, keep me daily in your perfect peace.

Oh, you have my sympathies, I have some understanding of this. Reading the psalms can be really helpful. Try it out loud. They can really help anchor you when the terror train jumps off the tracks and makes it hard to pray on your own.

Also, doing something can help regain control. Novenas are so hard for me to keep up with, but the ultimate Gateway Devotion is the Sacred Heart of Jesus devotion. Below is a link to one site, there are also pages in the forums concerning it. You read up on the brief history, review the promises Christ made to people who keep the devotion and then get started. Basically you attend Mass and receive communion on the first Friday of every month for nine consecutive months. On that day you reflect on the Sacred Heart of Jesus morning and night. Boom, done! Jesus has set us up for success with this devotion, and even I managed to successfully manage it.
