Eternal God , in whom mercy is endless,
and the treasury of compassion inexhastible ,
look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us ,
that in difficult moments we might not despair
nor become despondent , but with great confidence ,
submit ourselves to Your Holy Will ,
which is love and mercy itself . Amen

Holy One, Creator of Heaven and Earth,
Those of us with homes too often take for granted
four walls and a roof
the comfort of a bed
the privacy of bedroom doors
the luxury of a hot shower at the end of a long day.

We pray this morning for the many people in our community
who do not have a home:
for the mentally ill and addicted,
for the physically disabled and ill,
for victims of oppressive social structures and a failed economy–
for all homeless in the US, young and old, we pray.

Grant us compassion for all of your people.
May we open our hearts and our hands to the homeless in our community,
as we seek to follow the path of your son, Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Prayer for the Homeless

O God, as Naomi and Ruth journeyed from one land to another seeking a home, we ask your blessing upon all who are homeless in this world. You promised to your chosen people a land flowing with milk and honey; so inspire us to desire the accomplishment of your will that we may work for the settlement of those who are homeless in a place of peace, protection, and nurture, flowing with opportunity, blessing, and hope. Amen.

God of compassion,

your love for humanity was revealed in Jesus,

whose earthly life began in the poverty of a stable

and ended in the pain and isolation of the cross:

we hold before you those who are homeless and cold

especially in this bitter weather.

Draw near and comfort them in spirit

and bless those who work to provide them

with shelter, food and friendship.

We ask this in Jesus’ name.

God of Mercy:

We hear the persistent call to feed the hungry and find shelter for the homeless. Stir our hearts to move more deeply in our walk with Jesus.

Help us answer the question, “Why do we feel comfortable living beyond our needs when others do not have their basic needs met?”

Help us not be hypocrites of lip service but the disciples of action.

Keep our hearts soft enough to keep hearing the cry of the hungry and the homeless.

Amen.
