Hello.

Today (Saturday, July 22, 2017), Washington DC lost a legend and pioneer in television news. WRC-TV/NBC 4’s news journalist and anchor, Jim Vance passed away on Saturday morning. Vance was 75 years old. Vance spent over 45 years at WRC and has been with the station since 1969. He first started out as a reporter, then later as an anchor for all remaining years with WRC and even did reporting from time to time. Sometimes it was international, but most of the stories Vance loves to do were in the Washington DC area. Vance really loved his job, his passion for journalism, and his hobbies, including fishing and riding motorcycles. Vance was a true role model in the journalism field to young journalists, especially African-Americans and a great journalist, but also a friend to all, especially the viewers. He was cool, funny, kind (even kinder off the air) and easy to talk. What you see on-air with Vance is what you get off-air when the cameras weren’t rolling. He was the same off-camera as he is on television. Vance was like having a friend in your living room. However, Vance wasn’t perfect and had some personal issues, such as drug addiction and depression, which he was able to overcome. He never held back on the issues he faced, especially when trying to educate other people. He was indicted in the National Association of Black Journalist (NABJ) Hall of Fame in 2007.

Vance recently mentioned on-air to viewers in early-May 2017 that he has been diagnosed with cancer and currently was undergoing treatment. He was going to anchor whenever he can. His last public appearance was in June 2017 when a mural was painted and dedicated in his honor.

Vance has been a fixture and staple in television news for the Washington DC area for the past four decades and prior to being a journalist, he was a teacher and had a way with children. There will never be anyone like Jim Vance.

I watched Vance on television when growing up despite that I didn’t have a chance to intern at NBC News / NBC Washington nor met him.

Please pray for Jim Vance’s family, everyone - friends, co-workers, viewers, journalists, popular figures, previous interns, and others who came into contact with him, and his family at WRC-TV/NBC 4. They all need your prayers at this time.

Godspeed, Jim Vance. May you ride to heaven with glory, honor, dignity, and respect. You will sorely be missed by all. Rest in Peace, Jim Vance. Washington DC and the nation loves you and you will live on in our hearts and memories.

We’ve watched Jim for the 24 years we’ve lived in Northern Va. I was heartbroken to hear the news.

May our good Lord welcome Jim into his loving arms. May his soul rest peacefully an blessedly there in Jesus’ glorious presence. May the Holy Spirit comfort all Jim’s grieving family and friends. Amen.
