Prayers to deceased relatives?

Thank you for answering my question in part.

Is there any teaching suggesting that we should pray to Saints only and not to friends and close relatives.

Some Catholics assume that their parents are in heaven when they die, or at the least in the purgatory without considering the possibility of hell…

Praying to Saints for favors is something my wife and I do every day but not to relatives. We pray for them, not to them. We are having difficulty, without any reference, to make some friends understand this.
