It’s often said that prayers to Mary are for the purpose of intercession. However, snippets from just a few prayers that I found suggest that there can be much more than a request for intercession:

From: A CHILD’S PRAYER TO THE
IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY

O Most Holy Virgin Mother,
we listen with grief to the complaints
of your Immaculate Heart

We are moved by the ardent desire of loving you as Our Mother
and of promoting a true devotion to your Immaculate Heart.

We therefore kneel before you
to manifest the sorrow we feel
for the grievances that people cause you,
and to atone by our prayers and sacrifices
for the offenses with which they return return your love.
Obtain for them and for us the pardon of so many sins.

From: A NIGHT PRAYER TO OUR BLESSED MOTHER
Night is falling dear Mother, long day is o’er;
Before thy image I am kneeling once more
To thank thee for keeping me safe this day,
To ask thee this night to keep evil away.

From: A PARISH PRIEST’S PRAYER TO MARY MOST HOLY
Mother of the Church, a priestly people (I Peter 2:9),
Mother of priests, ministers of your Son:
accept the humble offering of myself,
so that in my pastoral mission
the infinite mercy of the Eternal High Priest
may be proclaimed:
O “Mother of Mercy”.

Grant me strength in the dark hours of this life,
support me in the exertions of my ministry,
entrust me to Jesus,
so that, in communion with you,
I may fulfill the ministry with fidelity and love,
O Mother of the Eternal Priest.

Make me faithful to the flock
entrusted to me by the Good Shepherd.

I consecrate and entrust myself to you, Mary,

From: PRAYER TO OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP # 7
O Mother of mercy, have pity on me;
I hear all men call thee the refuge and hope of sinners:
be therefore my refuge and my hope.

Alas, it is only too true
that in the past I have fallen miserably,
because I did not come to thee.
I know that with thy help I shall conquer;
I know that thou wilt help me,
if I commend myself to thee;
but I am fearful lest in the occasions of sin
I shall forget to call upon thee
and so I shall be lost.
This grace, then, do I ask of thee;
for this I implore thee,
as much as I can and know how to do;
namely, that in the assaults of hell
I may ever run to thy protection
and may say to thee:
Mary, help me;
Mother of Perpetual Help,
permit me not to lose my God.

O Mother of Perpetual Help,
grant me ever to be able to call upon thy powerful name,
since thy name is the help of the living
and the salvation of the dying.

Dear Lady, delay not to come to my assistance
whenever I call upon thee;
for in all the temptations that assail me,
in all the necessities that befall me,
I will never leave off calling upon thee,
ever repeating: Mary, Mary.

In thy hands I place my eternal salvation;
to thee I entrust my soul.

Dear friend,

You have been misled about the place of Our Blessed Lady in the story of Salvation, but this can be easily remedied with some study which will do nothing but add to your faith.

God bless

Of course! and how lovely! All expressions of the child’s love (and we are all her children in Christ) for its Mother. Here is an example of such love and praise from the Eastern Church:

The Akathist Hymn for the Feast of the Nativity of Our Most Holy Lady, the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary

Hymns of the FeastApolytikion (Fourth Tone)

Your birth, O Theotokos, brought joy to the whole world, for from you dawned the sun of righteousness, Christ our God. Freeing us from the curse, He gave us His blessings. Abolishing death, He granted us eternal life.

Kontakion (Fourth Tone)

In your holy birth, Immaculate One, Joachim and Anna were rid of the shame of childlessness; Adam and Eve of the corruption of death. And so your people, free of the guilt of their sins, celebrate crying: “The barren one gives birth to the Theotokos, who nourishes our life.”

And the Forefeast Hymns

Troparion (Tone 4)

Today from the stem of Jesse and from the loins of David, The handmaid of God Mary is being born for us. Therefore all creation is renewed and rejoices! Heaven and earth rejoice together. Praise her, you families of nations, For Joachim rejoices and Anna celebrates crying out: “The barren one gives birth to the Theotokos, the Nourisher of our life!” Kontakion (Tone 3)

Today the Virgin Theotokos Mary The bridal chamber of the Heavenly Bridegroom By the will of God is born of a barren woman, Being prepared as the chariot of God the Word. She was fore-ordained for this, since she is the divine gate and the true Mother of Life.

Gee, I didn’t know Catholic doctrine was up for popular vote.
What an insulting thread.

Some charity to our protestant brothers and sisters is always advised. Think of this thread this way, it’s an attempt by a protestant to figure out what we as Catholics believe. Nothing wrong with that.

Fair Lady:
When we pray to Mary, it’s because she as the Mother of God is perfectly formed to Christ’s will. This makes her the most powerful intersessor between Christ and us. In a way, it’s quite similar to you asking me to pray for you, which I doubt you would have a problem with. As a member of Christs body, I share in Christ’s role as intersessor, there for I can pray for you. The same is true of Mary, as a member of Christ’s body she also shares in Christ’s role as intersessor, just like we do. The difference is she is absolutly perfectly formed to Christ, and always has been. This makes her unique, even among the saints and angels in heaven.

I hope this helps you on your journy to understand the Catholic faith. God bless.

Blessed Mary always takes our intentions to Jesus. She leads us always to her Son. I personnaly enjoy praying to our Blessed Mother for help.

When you look at these prayers, be sure to think about how God works through people. You can ask me to pray for you, just as we ask Mary to pray for us. You can ask me to help you with some task here on Earth, just like we ask Mary to help us with our spiritual journey. God provides His grace, His love, His strength through others. We are healed by God through doctors sometimes. We are protected by God through a military sometimes.

God always has and always will work through people to bring graces to His people. Mary is no exception to this rule. The only exception is that Mary is the only person to have ever been perfectly conformed to His will. She has a special place in Heaven due to her unique role in salvation history.

You should read these prayers very closely so that you can see what is actually being asked for and who is actually being asked to provide it. Nothing Mary does, just as nothing any of us do in our intersession and aiding of others, is without God.

Read Rev 12:2, 5, 17. The woman who bore Jesus is the mother of all Christians. We should love her and respect her as our mother.

God Bless.

Some prayers to Mary are more theologically advanced and those who are not well-versed in Marian theology will perceive scandal in these prayers. One of the things to understand about Mary is that Catholics believe as Jesus’ mother, she has a special place of influence with Christ. Thus when we for her protection, etc… what we are asking her to do is obtain these favors for us from Christ.

This is Scripturally sound if you understand typology. In the Old Testament, the mother of the King (i.e. think Mary mother of the the King Jesus) the King was to not refuse his mother, although sometimes Kings failed at this (eg. 1 Kg 2:20). The New Covenant is the perfected version of the Old, and Jesus never refuses His mother (see John 2, wedding at Cana, for instance). The disposition of one praying the prayers you cite in the OP should be aligned with what I’m writing here.

So ultimately, Mary never supersedes Jesus. If you don’t grasp that, you won’t grasp Marian theology.

If you are truly interested in learning about Marian theology, and you understand my previous paragraph, read St. Louis de Montfort’s True Devotion to Mary. Read paragraphs 14-15 first. And then go back and read the whole thing.
:o

St. Louis de Montfort explained that Mary is the most beloved intercessor because she was Immaculately Conceived therefore her whole being is in perfect accordance with the Will of God.

He taught that she takes our prayers and removes from them everything that is undesirable and makes it more presentable by offering it to God herself. As long as she is not honored as God’s equal, you can not go wrong.

Our Dear Protestant Friends need to be conversant with the terms Dulia, Hyper Dulia, & Latvia & the theology that surrounds these terms. Then Perhaps they can gain a more accurate POV regarding what we actually Believe vs the Propaganda they’ve been inculcated with.

Nothing uncharitible about what I stated, and I stand by the post. She had an earlier thread in which this was hashed out, so I don’t think she’s trying to ‘figure it out’.
But perhaps for the lurkers, they can learn something.

I truly believe everything that scripture says about Mary and my faith will always be in God alone. He alone will receive all my prayers.

I don’t believe we need an intercessor between Jesus and ourselves. We can go directly to Him. Jesus said in Matthew 11:28&29 - “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

That’s quite an invitation! We can go directly to Jesus and don’t need to go through anyone else to receive what He has for us.

Even more than that, Jesus is our intercessor between God and man. Romans 8:34 tells us “Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.” Further to that, scripture also tells us in1 Timothy 2:5, "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

The only exception is that Mary is the only person to have ever been perfectly conformed to His will.
If that is true, that would suggest that Mary was sinless. Now, Mary was a very special person and had a very important role in bearing the baby Jesus and raising Him as a child. However, Mary needed a Saviour and she acknowleges this in Luke 1:47 ("And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant.” Luke 1:46-48. Mary was a very humble servant of God and she recognizes that all of the graces she received were from God.

I will be taking a closer look at those prayers and comparing them with what scripture says. But it will have to be another time as I’ve got to go now - work always seems to get in the way. 😉

That is exactly correct. We can go directly to Jesus. However, if I am praying to Jesus and others are praying to Jesus for me, I wouldn’t turn that down 👍

Your quite correct, Christ was Mary’s saviour!!! But not in the same way he was our saviour.

For us Christ:
Instituted the sacrament of baptism, this saves us from original sin and allows us to become the adopted sons of God and allows us to be saved. So that we can return to Gods grace when we sin after baptism, per 2 Corintians 5 he gave the Church the ministry of reconciliation! So that we might share in eternal life, Christ was crusified and died on the cross, and on the third day he was raised from the dead so that we can have the hope of resurrection!

But for Mary something else happened. For the Holy Mother, she was spared from original sin to begin with. For her, she would remain sinless her entire life exactly as you point out. I think that you and I can certainly agree on this, that this can only happen through God, through Christ him self! Thus as you, and Mary her self say. Christ is her saviour, but in a different way than he is our saviour.

To start your studies about Mary, I’d look to the John Henry Newman book The Second Eve, Extracts for the Times

That’s right.She was.

Next question???

This is true, Mary was sinless, but only because of her Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Take this scenario as an example. An alcoholic needs Gods strength to overcome his addiction. When they succeed, you can say they were saved by God. Does that mean a person who has never been tempted by alcohol is not also saved by God? The end result is the same, neither of them get drunk to the point that it harms them or anyone else. One person fell into the pit of alcoholism and was pulled out by God. The second person was saved before he could fall into the same pit. Both people were given a grace by God that had the same result, so both can be said to have a Saviour in Jesus Christ. Only the method has changed. The same is true for Mary.

Every normal person falls into the pit of original sin and thus concupiscence. We need Jesus Christ to pull us out of that pit. Mary was saved from ever falling in and so did not suffer from our fallen nature in life and so remained without sin but only because she was saved in that way.

BTW, your top two options are essentially the same choice. The prayers you listed are prayers for intersession.

God Bless.

Why don’t you point out the exact problems you see with each prayer. Quite honestly, I find an occasional prayer that I think is over the top regarding Mary, but I have no problem separating the teaching of the Church from the enthusiasms of some of its members. I’m guessing you can also separate the enthusiasms of some Protestants from correct Christian teaching, right?

BTW, please indicate where you found those prayers. I’m sure you didn’t do the research yourself.
