Dear Friends,
I would like to start a discussion on the differant prayers to the Mother of our Lord and some of the devotions to her in the East. This includes the Axion Estin and the Akathist.
Thanks for your help! :byzsoc:

What is an axion estin and an akathist?

I’ve a lot to learn. Is it like a Litany?

Here is one: ‘‘my every hope I place in you Mother Of God, keep me under your protection, Amen.’’

In the Orthodox prayer book it says ~

It is truly meet to bless thee, the Theotokos, more glorious than the cherubim and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim. Who without corruption gavest birth to God the Word, the very Theotokos doth do we magnify. :signofcross:

An Akathist is a liturgical hymn, the original one was to the Theotokos. Heres a link with more info: orthodoxwiki.org/Akathist

Hope this helps, if you have anymore questions I might be able to help. If not someone else (calling Dr. Roman! 🙂 ) more knowledgable might know.

Dear Friends,

Here is a link with traditional Canons and Akathists:

saintjonah.org/services/akathist.htm

Here is a link that has a number of akathists of my own composition based on Western themes such as Our Lady of Lourdes and Our Lady of Mount Carmel etc.

ukrainian-orthodoxy.org/prayer/aaPrayer.htm

There is a magnificent Russian and Slavonic language site with every known akathist (and they keep adding to the number as new ones are printed and published):

akafist.narod.ru

There are over 100 known akathists to the Mother of God and her miraculous icons. According to St Seraphim of Sarov, the Mother of God indicated to him how important the daily recitation of the Rosary/Rule of prayer is to obtain her protection over our lives.

The Akathist genre is very versatile and there are historic examples of akathists (“akathistos” = “standing”) in order of living persons e.g. the Ukrainian bard Taras Shevchenkno wrote an akathist to honour his benefactor’s charity toward him.

Enjoy!

Alex

Dear Dr. Roman,
Thanks for the websites! They are very helpful and informative. I know in the past you were looking for new subjects to write akathists on. If you are still writing them, an akathist to Saint Philomena or the Martyr Euphemia would be awesome!
Thanks!

“Alex” is fine - I only use “Dr Roman” when I make restaurant reservations . . . 😉

St Philomena it is! I’ll share the draft with you when I’m done!

Dear Sir,

Let me know what you think of my Akathist to Our Lady of Fatima which is on the Ukrainian Orthodoxy website above. You are a big “Fatima guy!” What do you think of it?

Alex

Being now in the great season of Pascha I immediately think of The Angel Cried (“cried out”, not shed tears :)). During this season we joyfully sing/pray this Megalynarion during the Divine Liturgy after the consecration of the Holy Gifts, sung in place of the one Wesley7 provided a short version of earlier in this thread.
The Angel cried to the Lady Full of Grace:
Rejoice, Rejoice O Pure Virgin!
Again I say: Rejoice!
Your Son is risen from His three days in the tomb.
With Himself He has raised all the dead.
Rejoice, Rejoice all ye people!
Shine, shine, shine O New Jerusalem,
The glory of the Lord has shone on you.
Exult now exult and be glad, O Zion,
Be radiant, O Pure Theotokos,
In the Resurrection of your Son!
Another favorite of mine is Agni Parthene (O Virgin Pure) also known as “Rejoice, O Unwedded Bride!”.

There is also a wonderful long dialog we hear between the Angel and the Theotokos which I think comes during the Compline and Great Canon service in Great Lent. Maybe someone knows a link to that.
